~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Base Hawaii

Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), formerly Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay and originally Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay, is a U.S. Marine Corps base facility and air station located on the Mokapu Peninsula of windward O'ahu in the City and County of Honolulu. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, is home to Marines, sailors, their family members, and civilian employees. The United States Marine Corps operates a 7,800-foot runway at the base.

MCBH is home for the 3rd Marine Regiment, Marine Aircraft Group 24, Combat Logistics Battalion 3 (CLB-3) 3rd Radio Battalion, and the Navy's Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 2.

On April 15, 1994, the Marine Corps consolidated all of its installations in Hawaii. MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Camp H.M. Smith, Molokai Training Support Facility, Manana Family Housing Area, Puuloa Range, and the Pearl City Warehouse Annex combined to form a new command, the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, headquartered at MCBH Kaneohe Bay.

All U.S. military units located in Hawaii fall under the command of the U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) which is headquartered at Camp H. M. Smith on Oahu.

The Commanding General of Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC) also commands 12 Marine Corps bases and stations in Arizona, California, Hawaii and Japan, as well as operational forces in Hawaii, and Okinawa, as well as units deployed to Southeast/west Asia.

Docked at Pearl Harbor along the "Battleship Row," the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is a fitting tribute to the 52 American submarines and more than 3,500 submariners lost in World War II.

The Bowfin is one of only 15 U.S. World War II submarines that did not wind up as scrap metal or as target practice for another military ship. The Pacific Fleet Memorial Association was chartered in 1978 and acquired the Bowfin just one year later. In 1980, the submarine was brought to Pearl Harbor and docked next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center. Finally, on April 1, 1981, the Bowfin officially opened to the public as a "museum ship."

The 10,000-square-foot museum exhibits a variety of submarine-related artifacts, including weapon systems, battle flags, photographs, recruiting posters and detailed submarine models. Visitors can examine the inner workings of a Poseidon C-3 missile, the only one of its kind to be put on public display. Also on exhibit is a Purple Heart that was awarded to crewmember Reid Lee, the lone Bowfin casualty of war. (Lee suffered shrapnel wounds during a surface engagement during the Bowfin’s seventh patrol.

WOW! Now this a tour that I could take.

http://www.maritime.org/tour/index.php

I tried to go through a Russian sub by the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA, but my claustrophobia reared its ugly head...I had to get out. This visual tour of the USS Pampanito is much more my speed.

Thanks, Sarge...((HUGS))

Good evening/morning, Mooch. Stay warm. Are you expecting snow?

“They” say that Tuesday/Wednesday will be above freezing, with mixed rain and snow...not good, but that by Saturday the high would be 12 and the low -1.

A very weird winter so far.

Sending mega prayers for your safe journey. Staying with Dawn sounds like an EXTREMELY good idea. And I bet Moxie would appreciate the respite of a shorter commute in ugly weather.

And make sure you have LOTS of warm stuff in Moxie.

There was a 360 degree website of that SCICEX expedition on the internet but I can’t find it anymore.

SCICEX 99

VADM Konetzni and ADM Bowman in the crew's mess of Hawkbill (SSN-666) during the SCICEX 1999 talking with the ship's COB. As Mike Hacking said; "There's a lot of horsepower at that table..."

Thanks...I’ve got them both in bed now. I have threatened my Dad about leaving the room, he did this morning to cook his breakfast (he can, but only if one of us knows what he is doing) ....because if he does he will wake her up. She said either the heating pad has helped “it”, or the Percoset is working on whatever “it” is. He has a whistle and she only needs push the “C” button on her phone and my phone rings. She has a phone with big buttons and “I” “C” “E” buttons.

I is 911, C is me, and E is my brother, who is currently working on the North Slope.

I REALLY do hope this is a one time thing. My Dad has already had 3 kidney stone surgeries.

That is a very cool video.
