Fox News ^ | February 28, 2013

A self-styled 'Mountain Man' who left modern conveniences for the backwoods of North Carolina decades ago is butting heads with local officials who say his forest compound isn’t up to code – and he may have television to blame.

Eustace Conway, who owns and operates a school that teaches hundreds of people how to live closer to nature, received a cease and desist letter from county officials who say his buildings don't meet code.

UN Agenda 21 says to use zoning laws to eliminate private property rights.

Mission accomplished!

Here's his problem, in the money quote:

"This is supposed to be the land of the free.
Government is supposed to help people."
- Eustace Conway

BANG! goes another illusion.

In fairness to him, let me continue his quote from the body of the story:

Government is supposed to help people, protect their individual liberties and freedom -- that's not what's happening here," said Conway.

I hope he has lots of center-fire ammunition and appropriate launchers, because he will soon receive a “visit” from the local SWAT Team(s).

There’s no building development going on except for a few federally funded projects, so that’s all that people in planning and building positions have to do. Many potential buyers have private inspections done anyway.

The so-called sequester won’t cause any of those highly productive, federally funded government employees to be laid off, though, because they are more essential to the economy than manufacturing or building.

[Second paragraph loaded with irony and sarcasm.]

Building codes should be made a private concern.

Your mortgage company could require that in order for the mortgage to be approved you obtain an insurance policy for the home, and that insurance company could require a thorough home inspection to see if the home will meet the code standards it wants to see.

In the case of Mister Conway, he should only need for the people who take his course to sign a hold-harmless agreement acknowledging that his buildings are not constructed to 21st century standards - end of his liability, and end of the government’s busy-body interest in being nanny-state concerned with whether or not people can or cannot lookout for their own safety concerns; including the Liberty to “knowingly take risks” that others may not.

There’s more to the story. Part of the land he uses is public land. The buildings are very poorly constructed. Any old timer I ever knew would have been ashamed to have their name associated with the crap he does.

In short he’s a hippy who uses the ‘primitive living camp’ as a method to get other people to support him.

He can build and live in a ram-shackle shed w/ corrugated tin roof....It’s NONE of the gov’t business.

But, yes, I think those pioneer ancestors would be appalled at what he’s thrown together.

“Code” is a code word for communistic central planning.

As soon as he starts selling access to those facilities and using public lands it is.

I loved that show but of the 3 guys they showcased he was the least admirable. He gets other people to do his work.

The county says it is just looking to fulfill its duty to protect public health and safety.

Doesn’t sound like its very public nor is it a public space for safety concerns.

Sounds like the Watauga Cty officials had nothing better to do...ESPECIALLY since they had said nothing during prior visits. Me thinks the hillbilly embarrasses them since he was on the tee vee.

Where are the freedom loving American people who will stand with this brave American and fight this out of control government?

Mountain Man should make a citizen's arrest of those County gov. officials who think they have jurisdiction over his private land!!!!!!

That's how the govenment got it's BIG FOOT in his doorway.

But being on an popular show is why the goverment is sticking it's nose in Eustace's butter...

Zoning laws are busybodies way of telling other people what to do with their own property..
