A Defeat for Demagogy - The failure of the "assault weapons" ban should make Americans proud.
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 20, 2013 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 03/20/2013 9:44:21 PM PDT by neverdem

"I don't have the words to describe the cowardice of Congress or the depravity of the gun lobby, which conspired to kill the assault-weapons ban," writes Ron Fournier of National Journal. We rate that statement PANTS ON FIRE, for Fournier turns out to be at anything but a loss for words.

"I can't explain the apparent impotence of President Obama who vowed to 'use whatever power this office holds' to convert the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School into commonsense common good," Fournier continues. Apparently Fournier needs a refresher course in the separation of powers. "I'm Just a Bill," the "Schoolhouse Rock!" classic, is as pertinent today as it was 40 years ago.

Fournier goes on to quote what he laughably describes as a "must-read column" by wannabe-pundit sportswriter Mike Lupica of New York's Daily News:

Any fool knows that [Adam] Lanza couldn't possibly have killed as many children as quickly as he did on the morning of Dec. 14 without an assault weapon in his hands. So how does the president and any other big politician who allows the gun nuts from the National Rifle Association to win again answer the larger question about weapons that make killings like the elementary-school massacre ridiculously easy: If not now for a ban on these weapons, when?
The headline reads "Spineless Pols Spit on the Graves of Newtown Victims by Not Pushing for Assault Weapons Ban." Hillel the Elder this guy ain't.

This columnist takes considerable pleasure in these emotionally overwrought laments, which are a synecdoche for the failure of the entire post-Newtown gun-control effort. As Fournier puts it, Obama and his allies wished "to convert the tragedy . . . into commonsense common good." We disagree on the merits and would put it this way: They cynically sought to exploit...

>”They should be fired if they don’t adhere to the constitution”<

If by “fired” you mean Hung until dead, I’m right there with you. Of course, you could just mean firing them by throwing them into an active Volcano.

Either way, I’m down with the struggle. (in my best Ghetto Rapper White Hut voice)

there was no failure... this was simply another push towards indoctrination. Every heavy push absorbs another percentage f the voting population and that is exactly how they have it planned. The knew from the beginning that atrocious bill could never pass and the commies were never willing to sacrifice seats in the house or senate for it either

They will wait until they get the House back in 2014 and ram it through like Obamacare.

The chances of that are between slim and none for two reasons: House results in midterms during an administration's 2nd term and the redistricting done after the last census. The GOP will probably hold the House for a decade, IMHO.

I guess I'm not "any fool". Lanza could have racked just as impressive a body count with a couple of three pound hammers. No one there could mount any effective opposition either way.

The people in that school were defenseless by law, and the fact was advertized.

Lyrics to I’m Just a Bill :
Boy: Woof! You sure got to climb a lot of steps to get to this Capitol Building here in Washington. But I wonder who that sad little scrap of paper is?

Bill: I’m just a bill
Yes, I’m only a bill
And I’m sitting here on Capitol Hill
Well, it’s a long, long journey
To the capital city
It’s a long, long wait
While I’m sitting in committee
But I know I’ll be a law someday
At least I hope and pray that I will
But today I am still just a bill

Boy: Gee, Bill, you certainly have a lot of patience and courage

Bill: Well I got this far. When I started, I wasn’t even a bill, I was just an idea. Some folks back home decided they wanted a law passed, so they called their local Congressman and he said, “You’re right, there ought to be a law.” Then he sat down and wrote me out and introduced me to Congress. And I became a bill, and I’ll remain a bill until they decide to make me a law.

I’m just a bill
Yes, I’m only a bill,
And I got as far as Capitol Hill
Well, now I’m stuck in committee
And I’ll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss and debate
Whether they should let me be a law
How I hope and pray that they will
But today I am still just a bill

Boy: Listen to those congressmen arguing! Is all that discussion and debate about you?

Bill: Yeah, I’m one of the lucky ones. Most bills never even get this far. I hope they decide to report on me favorably, otherwise I may die.

Boy: Die?

Bill: Yeah, die in committee. Oh, but it looks like I’m going to live! Now I go to the House of Representatives, and they vote on me.

Boy: If they vote yes, what happens?

Bill: Then I go to the Senate and the whole thing starts all over again.

Boy: Oh no!

Bill: Oh yes!

I’m just a bill
Yes, I’m only a bill
And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill
Well, then I’m off to the White House
Where I’ll wait in a line
With a lot of other bills
For the president to sign
And if he signs me, then I’ll be a law
How I hope and pray that he will
But today I am still just a bill

Boy: You mean even if the whole Congress says you should be a law, the president can still say no?

Bill: Yes, that’s called a veto. If the President vetoes me, I have to go back to Congress and they vote on me again, and by that time you’re so old . . .

Boy: By that time it’s very unlikely that you’ll become a law. It’s not easy to become a law, is it?

Bill: No!

But how I hope and I pray that I will
But today I am still just a bill

Congressman: He signed you, Bill! Now you’re a law!

Bill: Oh yes!

Americans should be very wary. While the "big bad assault weapon ban" is very publicly being swept off the table with one hand, magazine limits and a national firearms registration database is being put on the table with the other hand.

Once DiFi and her cronies have that list of who owns what, then they can begin their "Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in" campaign.

“The commie menace isn’t far off, as it used to be. It’s at our door and trying to kick it down as we speak.”

It’s in the White Hut/Crib, US Congress, state houses, local towns. It’s been inside the gates for the past 20-30yrs, and has the power it’s sought. Look at the CPUSA ‘45 Goals”. How many have already been achieved? How few are left to go?

“The failure of the “assault weapons” ban should make Americans proud.”...

This doesn’t make the proud at all. There should NEVER have even been any “Bill”. While there were no “assault” weapons banned, there certainly was considerable other crap that got through. We have a 2nd Ammendment to our Constitution. Unfortunatley the folks who pushed the bill trough, failed to read (or can’t understand).

They pulled the AW Ban so as to make sure the rest of the gun bill goes through. Harry reed KNOWS incrementalism.

What a bunch of crap. One little victory is not the end of a war. There is no pride in this. The Senate did what was correct and their job. This was put out to put people to sleep.

So, the gun-grabbers would prefer a 20-30 minute response time from good-guys with guns instead of an immediate response from good-guys with guns?

That is some pretty messed-up thinking there, Pal.

The magazine ban would be far more onerous than an AW ban. I am a little concerned that I only hear about dropping the AW ban.

And universal background checks, which is de facto registration, is even worse.
