Moving to Iceland, Looking for Someone Who Lives There
3/25/13 | self

Posted on 03/25/2013 4:09:08 PM PDT by Jerrybob

I know this is not news, but I'm looking for the widest possible audience.

My son and his family are considering a move to Iceland. I'm looking for anyone who might know someone who has moved from the U.S. to Iceland who might be willing to give them some tips on what to expect.

Anyone who knows someone who might be willing to communicate via email with them, please send me a private reply on how they may contact your person/people.

Thanks.

There’s this guy Kris...I think Kris Kringle. He’s older and has been all over the world. Interesting fellow.

Interesting. I understand that a lot must remain private, but the general stuff would be fun for the rest of us to know about. I saw a wonderful Martha Stewart show on all a visitor can do, the greenhouses, the hot water,springs...have thought about visiting. Iceland went bankrupt early in the global financial disaster—may prove an advantage for the nation.

Tips on what to expect?

It’s rather chilly in the winter.

When a volcano erupts there it can be a major event.

Icelandic is one of the most difficult languages to learn.

They did jail the bankers who screwed them over financially a few years ago.

Not immediately relevant to modern Iceland, but I greatly enjoyed reading Njal’s Saga, which takes place in Medieval Iceland. I would imagine that most Icelanders would be familiar with it, since their Viking past is an important part of their background.

They used to tell us that being stationed at Keflavik or maybe Adak (or both) that women were plentiful.

Usually a couple behind EVERY palm tree....

I hope you already speak the language because Icelandic is probably one of the most difficult there is for an outsider to learn.

Well the good news is that Iceland is really greener, and Greenland is Colder, except for the volcanic glacier ice on part of the island; you might get island fever but that is easily cured with airline tickets to of the mainland’s;)
