The gay marriage logo: Harassment in red and pink (Vanity)

Is anyone else feeling harassed by the gay rights “equals” logo? I see it everywhere: it fills my Facebook page, it is on the news, it is everywhere and I feel pounded by it.

This enormous red and pink “equals” sign is strong and effective; it is also becoming a bully club as it appears everywhere and those who bear it seem to want to beat us into submission.

My job is analyzing art, so let’s look at this sign. Isn’t purple the color of the gay alliance? Wouldn’t a pink equals against a purple background be prettier and more softly effective? Wouldn’t the rainbow of colors also refer to gay rights?

No, whoever designed this obnoxious logo wants to hit us as hard as possible: the red presses forward, the pink recedes but subtly. The edges are hard. The “equals” sign can be red on several levels: as an “equals” of course, but also as clubs, as anything hard and flat….like blinders.

As a professor in a liberal state, I have friends across the spectrum, on Facebook and elsewhere. I have friends who are gay and married and those who are very Christian and most opposed to such marriage and many more friends in between. But when I log on to Facebook now, only one sign dominates: that red “equals” sign is everywhere, hammering me. It is a particularly obnoxious sign and, to me, signals what the liberals always do, bully one into submission.

The worse thing is everyone who jumps on the bandwagon….I can understand my gay friends using it as their profile picture. But then everyone else uses is to…”Me too, me too….I want to be in and cool and use it too. I agree with all the cool kids…Me too, me too!!”

I wish, for once, that some of my liberal friends would actually think through an issue instead of immediately joining the crowd. Can we please know the consequences of these great sounding bills and legislation before they become law? (Can someone actually read some of these bills before forcing people to vote for them?) And if the Supreme Court, in the upcoming months, decides that gay marriage is a states’ rights issue, will the libs shut up and let us live our own lives? Or will they continue to batter those in non-gay-marriage states until they finally give up and go along?

Note what happened with Obamacare. Sounded great, eh? Free insurance for all! Well, we find this month that premiums will go up (duh…we have to cover more issues for a longer time, well premiums are going to go up.) Employers have been reducing hours of their employees so they don’t have to cover the insurance…so, actually MORE people will be uninsured, almost twice as many as were originally uninsured. If we had spent the money on insuring those uninsured directly, we would be in MUCH better shape now. But no one will listen to those “cold, unfeeling, rich Republicans” so we are losing some of the best insurance options in the world and perhaps damaging our health care system beyond repair. Can someone please analyze the future effects of all legislation before these bills are passed?!

I ask this because I think that one of the main motivating factors for marriage equality seems to me to be financial. “Give me my social security, my lover’s pension, the benefits that are due me.” We hear little about love and lifelong commitments. We hear instead the incessant liberal rant for more money and benefits. Heterosexual lovers can live together unmarried nowadays; homosexual lovers do the same. But instead we hear about the “unfair” laws if one is not married. Can someone please examine the pros and cons and the effects of such laws, with statistics, before decisions are made? How will pensions and insurance be affected? Or is it too late already?

If you are being hammered by people on your Facebook, you need to take action against such violence in order to make it stop. You could tell them to stop their violent hammering at once or you will take immediate defensive action. If that does not work, you can stand your ground and take violent action to defend yourself and maybe even call the police.
