Treasury Sued to Remove 'God' from Currency (In God We Trust)

WASHINGTON, DC (Worthy News)– The Freedom From Religion Foundation is suing the U.S. Treasury Department to remove "In God We Trust" from all its currency.

A nonprofit organization that represents atheists and agnostics, the FFRF claims the motto is "offensive" to the nonreligious.

In February, the FFRF and 19 plaintiffs filed a civil suit in New York claiming the motto violates the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution; they also claim it forces atheists, agnostics and secular skeptics to impart a religious message they all decry whenever using U.S. currency, resulting in a false declaration of their own religious views.

Dan Barker, co-president of the Wisconsin-based FFRF, also believes the motto sends a religious message to everyone who uses U.S. currency.

"[In God We Trust] is indeed considered to be a religious phrase," Barker told The Christian Post. "The message belongs in churches, private institutions and can be shared by missionaries, but who is the 'we' representing, if not all of us trust in a God?"

If they succeed in having it removed, then all is lost. How long, folks?

Simple solution. Don’t use currency.

Atheists and agnostics and whatevers can use credit cards. I’ve yet to see “in God We trust” on any credit card.

if they don’t believe in God... what’s the problem?

would they be offended if i worshiped a rock?
should i be offended they don’t believe in the soul?

wouldn’t removing the phrase have more impact to those that believe it akin to turning their backs on God... then those that don’t believe at all?

don’t the number of people that believe in God FAR outnumber the paltry few that do not?

200 million or so people in this country and 19 total a-holes want to rule on what goes on our money.

In a real world these people would be told to go screw themselves. They probably wouldn’t be offended by that as they have already screwed their souls.

I am personally offended by thes 19 a-holes, nobody cares about the majority that is offended by these morons.

I remember reading an article once from an atheist who was all for leaving God on money and in the pledge etc etc. His reasoning being that even though he didn’t believe in God, he believed in “hope” which he took as the meaning of the phrase. “In God we trust” in other words, We hope this country works out. To me it means God watching over us, but I can also take it as a meaning of hope. That’s the thing about dikwads like these idiots, they are so negative. They want no God, no hope, nothing. But of course no doubt they try to ram their religion of liberalism down everyones throat.

Would they be happy if it said “In Our Creator We Trust”? If not, then the constitution will have to re-done.

That’s the point.

If somebody truly did not believe in God, they wouldn’t be ‘offended’.

I think it’s the horrible, sneaking suspicion that they might be wrong that drives them to such insane depths of utter denial.

I don’t believe in UFOs but I couldn’t possibly care less if everybody else does and would never pitch a hissy fit every time War Of the Worlds comes on.

•The Freedom From Religion Foundation, Inc. conducted a national survey which showed that “In God We Trust” was regarded as religious by an overwhelming percentage of U.S. citizens. They initiated a lawsuit on 1994-JUN-8 in Denver CO to have it removed from U.S. paper currency and coins. They also wanted it to be discontinued as the national motto. Their lawsuit was dismissed by the district Court without trial, on the grounds that “In God We Trust” is not a religious phrase! The Tenth-Circuit federal judge confirmed the dismissal, stating in part:

“...we find that a reasonable observer, aware of the purpose, context, and history of the phrase ‘In God we trust,’ would not consider its use or its reproduction on U.S. currency to be an endorsement of religion.” 5

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review all of these rulings. It might be embarrassing to them, because the motto also hangs on the wall at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has commented in passing on the motto saying that:

“[o]ur previous opinions have considered in dicta the motto and the pledge [of allegiance], characterizing them as consistent with the proposition that government may not communicate an endorsement of religious belief.” Allegheny, 492 U.S.

How many times are we going to go through this? Until the commie piggies finally win? If they don’t like the money, they should get rid of it. Obnoxious bass turds. Why doesn’t the Freedom from Obnoxious Atheists sue to have “In God We Trust” remain on the money?
