Sen. Cruz introduces alternative gun bills
The Hill ^ | 04/16/13 07:56 AM ET | Jonathan Easley

Posted on 04/16/2013 7:01:33 PM PDT by Red Steel

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday introduced two gun bills, one of which is co-sponsored by a group of 10 Republicans, many of whom signed a pledge earlier this month to filibuster attempts to pass gun control.

The measures provide an alternative to the gun control bill the Senate will begin debate on this week, which would expand background checks on gun purchases, crack down on gun trafficking and beef up security in schools. GOP senators have vowed to block that bill, claiming it goes too far and infringes on the rights of gun owners.

Cruz introduced a bill to “protect law abiding citizens by preventing criminals from obtaining firearms.” Among the 10 GOP co-sponsors are Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rand Paul (Ky.), and Mike Lee (Utah), all signers of the filibuster pledge. Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) is also a co-sponsor.

Cruz also introduced an alternative bill aimed at preventing the trafficking and straw purchasing of firearms that does not presently have any co-sponsors.

The text of the bills is not yet available.

A source close to negotiations told The Hill that Republicans are working on further legislation that would focus on enforcing, rather than expanding, the current background-check system and a bill that aims to improve mental health record-keeping.

A focused lobbying effort by families of the victims of the Newtown massacre last week and a background-check deal between Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), a centrist Democrat who has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, and conservative Republican Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.) created momentum for gun control legislation last week.

The Senate voted on Thursday to begin debate on the original bill and amendments despite filibuster threats, but the measure still faces an uphill climb. Democrats will need a handful of Republicans to vote in favor of a final bill to send it to the House, but the party can’t count on all of its members to support a final bill.

Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier pointed to the NRA’s decision to grade lawmakers' votes on a procedural motion for the bill — a move that deviates from the group's standard protocol — as evidence the effort “to prevent such legislation is gaining momentum."

Sens. Manchin and Toomey are working to rally support for their background-check provision, and other senators are working on alternative gun bills, including Sens. Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and Graham.

Passing nothing is better than passing something just to pass something.

Same thought, I was hoping for some help on it.

And why two different bills?

I have a simple law.

The only requirement to purchase a firearm is that you must have a valid voter registration card.

Set the limits for a voter registration card as you desire.

(Suck on that liberals)

Won’t matter, do you think NY or Chicago would follow federal law anyway?

Sorry to be such a downer.

RE :”Bad wording by the Hill. I’ve read Cruz’s alternative bill will be if you can carry in one state, you can carry in all US states.”

Very Devious. That is why I like him.

For cryign outl oud- you cn NOT give the creeps o nteh left ANY room to operate at all- as soon as you do you are sunk- We HAVE ENOUGH GUN BILLS ALREADY CRuz! IF you give the left ANY legitimacy at all- as soon as they get it you will have them enforcing a ‘zero tolorance’ policy which will confiscate guns from practically EVERYONE and most certainly from folks who have ever had any types of medicatiosn for depression/anxiety etc and from peopel who have ANY sort of a record whether early in life or later- whether severe record or slight-

We ALREADY HAVE DOCTORS AND NURSES INFORMING ON PEOPLE adn gettign hteir rigths to own guns taken away in NY- what the hell don’t you understand abotu ca[pitulating ANYTHING to the left Cruz?

WE HAVE A GUN BILL CRUZ- IT’S CALLED THE SECOND AMENDMENT!

enough WITH THE FREAKIN AMENDMENTS ALREADY! wE THE PEOPEL WISH TO DEFEND Ourselves when we are attacked NOT IF we are attacked- and peopel liek you and ilk are makign it imopossible and WHEN you hand the left what they want- they wILL BE EBOLDENED to oppress EVERYONE they want with their ‘zero tolorance’ policies- Don’t you get that CRuz and ilk?

The NRA used to ignore votes on procedural stuff, like a motion to proceed to a bill. NOW the NRA is going to score procedural votes. All the Senators that thought they could get a free pass with the NRA, by voting for the motion to proceed, then against moving to take the vote, or agreeing to pass, NOW, voting AYE on a cloture motion is counted like voting AYE for final passage. Keeps the Senators from playing both sides.

So, the comment is basically that the NRA implementing a new scoring system is evidence that efforts to hold Congress accountable is gaining momentum.

There’s only one message Senators need to hear: “If you have the votes and states to amend ‘shall not be infringed,’ get back to me. Until then, knock it off.”

What does that mean? It makes no sense to me.

It means that if anyone who lets the bill come to a vote will receive an F from the NRA. It used to be that pols could let the bill come to a vote and then, after enough votes had been amassed to get it to pass, vote against it and get an A from the NRA. Now, to get an A, they have to prevent it from coming to a vote.

[[If they were truly honoring the oaths they gave they would introduce nothing at the federal level. Once background checks were introduced the qualifying criterion was changed and they began to include a broader reange of disqualifying criterion. Now misdeameanor crimes are used to deny ownership and possession and crimes of that nature, which happened decades ago with no further incidents in the persons history to warrant a denial, are being used to deny them their right! These guys are further opening the can of worms!]]

Sir you hit it right on the head- ANY record- no matter how insignificant, whether itr be petty larceny, hittign someoen in high school, actign like a bully on playground, shoving spouse to protect youurself whiel spouse goes berzerk- then havign them report you aS THE agressor etc- will mark a person as a ‘potential risk’ and ANY case where a person may have temporarily suffered nervous breakdowns, depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder etc will mark you are ‘untrustworthy’ and ‘not stable enough to own a gun’ by the left

THIS IS WHY the right shoudl have NEVER allowed thsi to even coem to a vote and WHY the right should NOT be puttign forth ANY new gun biulls at ALL- We have enoguyh laws o nthe books, and hte right shoudl be hammerign this FACT home to the public and stating that the left has FAILED to uphold those laws, and now are tryign to blame innocent law abidign citizens and the right shoudl be holdign oen press cofnerence after5 another statign that whiel the left are desperately tryign to vioalte the people’s 2n’d amendment rights, the right would NOT be a party to such anti-Aemricanism

[[Passing nothing is better than passing something just to pass something.]]

It is much MUCGH better i nthis case because it woudl send a VERY clear message to the peopel that ‘hey’ you elected us to protect your consitutional right,s and that’;s precisely what we are goiogn to do by REFUSING to bring htis blatantly unconstitutional bill to the floor for a vote”

But the right didn’t have enough spien or itnegrity to REFUSE to brign soemthign to the floor for a vote- Had they just simpyl REFUSED to brign it to a vote, the wailing by the left woudl have eventually died down- the peopel woudl have had to endure their temper tantrums for awhile it’s true- but it eventually woudl have died down as the spopiled rotten little brats woudl have eventually got the message that they were acting liek just that- spolied rotten little brats-

”Bad wording by the Hill. I’ve read Cruz’s alternative bill will be if you can carry in one state, you can carry in all US states.”

these idiots need to go home...why in hell propose another *law* that accomplishes NOTHING except to be another brick in the progcomms wall ???

do we really believe that CCW reciprocity would be adhered to in the short term by DC, NY, ILL or Ca ??? not a chance, as even *legal* transport on aircraft thru NY gets hammered if the bags have to be handled by the citizen perp...

once that is in place, its a hop, skip and jump for it to be tweaked in the next session, making CCW *laws* "universal" to DC,NY, ILL and Ca standards...

no thanks cruz...SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED !!!

how friggin hard is that ???

He should introduce a bill to repeal the 1934, 1968 and 1986 gun control acts in their entirety.

I harken back to Atlas Shrugged and the words of Ayn Rand regarding the plethora of laws and regulations being promulgated by these gentlemen. We will all be criminals if this continues. The illogic boggles the mind.

Cruz should write and submit bills for repealing the ‘34 Firearms Act, ‘68 Firearms Act and the ‘86 Firearms Act. One for each of them just to agitate the libs. Maybe Schumer would stroke out.
