Critics see conflict of interest as Obama admin advises doctors on prescriptions

The Obama administration’s “academic detailing” program — through which representatives from the federal government help doctors select prescription drugs for their patients — is coming under harsh behind-the-scenes criticism from corporate executives including the CEO of Pfizer, who is trying to have the project disbanded.

The academic detailing project, created by President Obama’s 2009 stimulus program, sends federal government consultants to doctors’ offices and pharmacies to provide “evidence-based research findings” that can be used to help doctors and pharmacists choose prescription drugs for their clients.

Academic detailing consultants visit doctors at approximately 1,300 primary care clinician sites and 200 hospitals and health systems in targeted areas around the country.

“Trained clinician consultants visit physicians, pharmacists, nurses, other clinicians, and health care system decisionmakers nationwide to share unbiased, noncommercial information about medications and other therapeutic options with the goal of improving patient care,” according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Department of Health and Human Services agency responsible for overseeing the program.

Critics view the academic detailing project as a conflict-of-interest because it allows the federal government — which has an incentive under Obamacare to keep health care costs low — to guide doctors toward choosing cheaper generic drugs for their patients.

As if physician societies don’t already do this? This stuff is going to be so wrong.

There is a difference between having a formulary of available/preferred meds and sending an individual wi th presumably little to no medical training out to tell me what to do when.. A big difference

I mean what the gummit gets into here will be so wrong. Whether they send out books or whether they send out personal emissaries. If it’s my health I want the likes of the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics to weigh in on modern best practices. Not fifth rate pencil pushers with attitudes in Washington.

The government’s incentive is to turn you into Soylent Green at retirement age. Given Gosnell, that isn’t so unbelievable.

American-American doctors don’t take treatment advice from bureacrats. Unless they are of the death panel’s killem mentality, they are usually western in ethics.

The American-American doctors will retire or do other work. The affirmative action foreign crowd will appreciate the government telling them what to do. The lefties will get to murder a bunch of people upon their whim. Government workers can rationalize and find an excuse for anything they do or want to do.

Doctors are science majors. Most surgeons can do chemical breakdowns of every prescription they write down. Wtf is some @sshat from Washington going to know? This is getting downright crazy!

I still remember the Army “strongly encouraging” us to prescribe Norvasc as first line therapy for hypertension. It wasn’t that long ago.

I’d like to be present on the day one of these reps details the preferred drug list to the medicaid recipients and the union workers. Wait til you see the fireworks when these groups won’t be able to get BRAND NAME DRUGS. Just like the old days, when patients would say “ Don’t gimme none of them jenetic drugs”

$26 million paid to a public relations firm does nothing to improve health but does raise the cost of healthcare. Very likely at least 10% will find its way into the coffers of the DNC and progressive lobbying organizations as well as ex Democrat politicians feasting on the lobbying gravy train.

The patient will come last in what will be a fiasco with tragic results. Hundreds of $billions of our money so everybody can have aspirin.

When it comes to Abortion, the Libtards say that no one should get between the doctor and patient when they wish to kill the baby! But it's OK for the Feds to get between the doctor and patient to control what kind of prescriptions are mandated.

As long as sheeple show up to be shorn, the gubmint can cure or kill them. There is a bright future in “for cash only” medicine....which the Ruling Class will then try to outlaw, of course. The Overlords want no competition in their Brave New World.
