President Barack Obama says he wants to “see if we can institutionalize” in Washington the community spirit that sometimes emerges after a terror attack or an industrial explosion.
The president made the comments during a fund-raising trip to New York, shortly after leaving Washington, D.C. in an uproar over an explosion of scandals, including last week’s revelations of politically motivated IRS investigations and the White House’s editing of reports on the lethal terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Shortly after Obama flew north, D.C. was rocked by another political explosion when the Associated Press said the Justice Department obtained two months of phone records from several of its offices, including its office on Capitol Hill.
“There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters … [The records] disclose information about AP’s activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know,” said a statement from AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt.
In New York, however, Obama was welcomed by a community of big-dollar donors from the Big Apple’s fashion, culture and banking industries.
The first event of three was held in a five-story mansion owned by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The roughly 60 guests included singer Justin Timberlake, actress Jessica Biel, and fashion-industry mogul Tommy Hilfiger.
“More than anything, what I will be striving for over the next three and a half years is to see if that spirit we saw in Boston and West Texas, to see if we can institutionalize that [and] if we can create a framework where everybody’s working together and moving this country forward,” he told the community of wealthy donors, according to the pool report.
The reference to Boston likely was intended to remind donors about the city’s reaction to the bomb attack by two Muslim Chechens that killed three people and injured more than 200. The other reference was to a large industrial explosion at an impoverished small town in Texas last month.
As Obama referred to the positive effects of these catastrophes for an audience of millionaires, Timberlake, “wearing trendy glasses with thick black plastic frames,” according to the pool reporter, looked on with “his hair was parted on the side and slicked back.”
However, Obama said, bipartisan cooperation is being blocked by feverish GOP hostility.
“What’s blocking us right now is a sort of hyper-partisanship in Washington that I was, frankly, hoping to overcome in 2008 … My thinking was when we beat them in 2012 that might break the fever, and it’s not quite broken yet,” he said.
GOP leaders and advocates say their policies are motivated by a coherent and popular conservative and libertarian ideologies.
But Obama suggested that the GOP’s partisanship results from an uncooperative “base” and one radio host, Rush Limbaugh.
“I genuinely believe there are Republicans out there who would like to work with us but they’re fearful of their base and they’re concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them,” he said.
Obama’s portrayal of the GOP as feverish loudmouths bolsters his ongoing effort to win the 2014 mid-term elections by turning out the Democratic base, and by persuading swing-voting suburbanites that the GOP is reckless and irrational.
Obama ended his on-again, off-again call for bipartisanship by suggesting he would try to break the GOP majority in the House.
“If there are folks who are more interested in winning elections than they are thinking about the next generation then I want to make sure there are consequences to that,” he said, without explaining his threat.
Obama is slated to attend two more fundraisers May 13.

I believe we are at a point where a special prosecutor would have to be appointed, but the President might not want such a character asking questions. So I have doubts that such a person will be appointed.
As for the 2014 elections? At present point....the IRS is in big trouble and will simply pump up the Tea Party folks even more. I’d give better than average odds that the Republicans maintain their number and even pick up four more Senate seats. This wasn’t the WH plan for 2014, but we are mostly in a lame-duck situation now....for the remaining time. Nothing of significance to be accomplished, if you ask me.
The little thug punk is back to his usual threatening bluster, I see. He appears to be completely unphased by all of the malfeasance and corruption of his regime that is now being made public.
Part of it, I imagine, is a strategy: saying everything that all that everybody else does is “all about politics” (while at the same time, being arguably the most relentlessly partisan president ever) has worked for him in the past. But I’m not sure it’s going to work this time.
Behind his words, you can see a lot of anger, even more than usual, since he’s also about the angriest president we’ve ever had. I think if he doesn’t make these scandals go away by just shrugging them off and having the press protect him (and I’m not sure they all will anymore), he’s going to get proactive with his anger. That is, he will issue some sort of order suppressing or suspending free speech, or he will arrest prominent opponents on some kind of trumped up charges.
Another possibility is the creation of a national emergency of some sort that will allow him to assume dictatorial powers and shut down all examination of his behavior or that of his minions.
This shaves awfully close to “institutional terror”, a’la Robespierre, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot. He’s channeling his heroes and puffing in front of the mirror again.
I think we’re seeing an extended crisis atmosphere, with further testimony on Bengazhi, the IRS scandal, and the AP phone record scandal. Just not the kind of crisis the Zero was hoping for.

This line stands out to me in your post. I think it bears repeating about 1000 times. “America’s Angriest President” is a nice little tagline for Dear Leader. I’ve long semi-despaired as to the difficulty of composing bumper sticker slogans (not that I’d put them on my car!) to counter 0bama...and that could be one.
To a dictatorial mindset, it’s all personal. That’s why any opposition or even the thought of opposition infuriates people like Obama (and Hitler, Mao, Lenin...).

Prior to the Boston bombing the Obama WH and his minions were ginning up civil unrest in 3 different groups, Whites, blacks, and Hispanic.
They are in the process of doing the exact same thing again.
I’m not a big believer in “just a coincidence”.
The story of the Boston bombers suddenly changing the day of the attack from July 4 to April 15 which of course meant it just had to be “anti govt right wingers”, wasn’t just a coincidence.
Don’t be surprised, now that it’s suddenly been released how the IRS targeted the right, if there is a major terrorist attack against a govt building and IRS.
Of course it will just have to be the work of “right wing extremist”.
Just like the OKC bombing was used to silence anyone asking questions about Waco, this would be used to silence anyone asking questions about Benghazi.
obama is under scrutiny for the first time in his life... his minions are turning on him and the right is now being justified as being truthful... he is a withering man.
