Sex tape ruined my career, says former soldier [Canadian female soldier]

MONTREAL - A stolen iPhone and a sex tape that's been circulating for three years has left a young woman's military career in ruins.

Alexandra-Kim Martin-Roberge joined the Canadian Forces in May 2009, dreaming of serving in the infantry.

One of only two women in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, the Quebecer had planned to join the combat mission in Afghanistan.

But one indiscretion destroyed her reputation, her self-esteem and her integrity in the eyes of comrades.

In 2010, while on a 12-month assignment in Alberta, a fellow soldier stole her smart phone and copied a 13-minute clip that depicted her having sex, her face clearly visible.

"He managed to take my phone during a patrol," Martin-Roberge told QMI Agency. "Ten days later I found out all the guys were swapping it. It was like an atomic bomb. For a woman in the infantry, this is the worst thing that can happen."

Other soldiers began making fun of her, even to her face.

"They said I was doing porn movies," said Martin-Roberge. "They called me a slut and a bitch. I'm so sorry that I made this video, but I didn't do anything wrong. It was stolen from me, and since then, I've suffered a public rape."

Foreign troops eventually watched the sex tape and American soldiers even asked her for her autograph. She went on leave, then rejoined the 3rd Battalion but got into an altercation with another soldier who insulted her.

Martin-Roberge now faces a court martial over the confrontation and is currently on sick leave. She has yet to obtain a full discharge and is trying to switch to a career in real estate.

Officials at CFB Valcartier near Quebec City tell QMI that they're aware of Martin-Roberge's case.

The Department of National Defence says it's taking the woman's allegations very seriously and is looking into her claims.

Meanwhile, Martin-Roberge is seeing a therapist.

"My dignity and reputation are dirt," she said. "I think everyone at Valcartier base must have (the clip)."

"People who know me know that I would have given anything to my regiment. I made an effort to be accepted as a woman in a male environment."

It's not the first time a soldier's sexual escapades have gone public.

A soldier in Kingston, Ont., was charged in 2001 following release of a video depicting a male soldier having sex with a female student.

No, she allowed someone to make a video of her having sex. That is where she messed up. I am amused at everyone’s derision. Have none of you ever looked at a magazine, Playboy perhaps, with only one thought in mind. It has pictures of nude women. Did you also think so lowly of them at the time you were enjoying their pictures?

. Pleeease. I have no problem with others taking nudie pictures or more....
And I don't care what any of them do in private.
Buuuuut...

Women who pose in magazines and appear in pornos make a conscious adult decision to do so and are usually paid for their participation. Afterwards, they may have regrets but they usually don't bat their eyelids and fein the "wounded, innocent virgin routine"

This lady also made a conscious adult decision to allow herself to be recorded in an intimate way.

Don't pretend this was like totally non consenting women, like Erin Andrews, the sportscaster who was in her own room undressing and some pervert was filming her without their consent.

Last but more important, she was IN THE ARMY where THERE IS NO EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY.

Especially on PATROLS.Yeah it sucks a third party prev stole her property and he/she should be brought up on the appropriate charges, but please, as an adult, she realized the situation, and should have destroyed or secured the embarrassing images.

I have warned my nieces(and nephews) to never do anything in private that you would be ashamed to admit in public. Too bad this "soldier" didn't follow this advice.

If she had been fitted with THE CLUB, none of this would have ever happened.

I agree that people do make mistakes and some mistakes aren’t worth a lifetime of punishment.

“Illegal” not “Wrong” is a law thing.

Well, technically you are correct. I do see them as flip sides of the same coin, though. After all, outside the law, “wrong” is a subjective term.

In my post, I almost said “law and God”, but decided to keep it simple.

Morality is subjective. Depends on the person. Christians have different moral compasess than abortionists and homosexual marriage advocates.

What she did was wrong in as much as it was legal but it violated the predominant morals. It was wrong in that it hurt her. It was no more wrong than the act being recorded, though.

That’s the problem here. That is why, though I condemn her behavior, I also condemn the hypocricical behavior of those shaming her.

But I condemn neither her nor them, only the activity. As a Christian, that is the only authority God has given me.

I have no power to condemn, I can only say she got what she deserved for her horrible actions. If she did “nothing wrong” then why is she so ashamed of it?

I’m doing something I hate when others do it. I’m arguing semantics instead of the real issue. What is comical is that I’m a huge fan of returning our culture to the concept of shame for inapropriate acts.

IOW, at the core, I completely agree with you.

Getting caught like that was almost karmic, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Shame needs to make a come back.

Admitting that we have really degenerated since I was 18 I doubt that the cannibalism taboo will be crossed by Western man, absent mass starvation.

Agreed, but I have to wonder if I'm the only one disturbed by these commercials? The first one I remember had something to do with chocolate chip cookies, and it really bothered me.
