In a post below, I noted that during his appearance tonight on Sean Hannitys program, Marco Rubio failed to defend his immigration bill, even though the format of the show was highly favorable to the Senator from Florida. Here is what happened.
Hannity asked a central question that has become even more pressing in view of recent Obama administration scandals, particularly the one involving the IRS. That question, in essence, is: given that current immigration law isnt being enforced, and given what we know generally about how government operates, how can we have any real confidence that the border security provisions of Schumer-Rubio will be carried out effectively?
Rubio did not respond by arguing that his bill will ensure border security. Instead he responded by saying, more than once, that if it we cant write a law that ensures border security, it wont pass and shouldnt.
There are obvious problems with this shocking answer. First, it isnt necessarily true. Second, its an admission that Rubio is advancing a bill he cant say will be effective, and thus an admission that he has abdicated his responsibility as a legislator.
We cannot depend on Congress to reject immigration reform legislation that wont bring about effective border enforcement. Why not? Because Democrats are committed to amnesty with or without border security, and thus will vote virtually unanimously for immigration reform legislation that doesnt secure the border.
This means that such legislation can be enacted even if only about 10 percent of Republicans in the Senate and the House support it. Does anyone believe that congressional Republicans are 90 percent fool-proof on immigration reform (or anything else)? I dont.
Second, and more fundamentally, how can Rubio write and sponsor legislation on such an important issue when he (1) cannot say that the legislation will be effective (indeed, he basically said it wont be effective under a liberal Democratic administration such as the one we have now) and (2) concedes if it isnt effective it shouldnt pass? Rubio acts as if the legislation is someone elses thought experiment, not his own handicraft.
President Obama is famous for detaching himself from the policies carried out by those who work for him. But I doubt even Obama would detach himself from legislation that he wrote.
Since Rubio seems agnostic about the enforcement provisions of his own bill, maybe he should vote present.
Rubio knows, as we all do, that the bills enforcement provisions could have been significantly stricter in a number of respects. He even said on Hannitys program that Congress should look at ways of better ensuring that enforcement occurs.
So why didnt Rubio include such provisions in the bill that he drafted? He knows that the Democrats cant attain their holy grail of amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals without Rubios participation.
It is simply unconscionable that Rubio agreed to sponsor legislation the efficacy of which he cannot vouch for, on the theory that other, more responsible legislators will make sure the legislation wont pass if its deficient. His stance is only marginally more responsible than Nancy Pelosis view that we should pass Obamacare so we can find out whats in it.
Frankly, I dont believe Rubio won many converts for his bill tonight. If anything, he may have lost some backing.
Unfortunately, though, Rubio continues to dominate the Fox airwaves, thereby crowding out strong expressions of anti-amnesty sentiment. Absent those strong expressions in large media outlets like Fox, Schumer-Rubios chances of passage are good, notwithstanding Rubios supposed confidence that Congress would never pass a bad immigration bill.
Rubio is getting caught up in his stardom.
He wants to make a signature bill that will a crowning achievement of sorts, without the mile markers that will enable us to measure the legislation success or failure.
Oh I see.
If the illegals are not allowed to work and denied welfare they will go home. It's really not that hard.
I doubt they’d self-deport. They’ll find some way to keep the free money coming in, if not outright demonstrations and marches organized by Liberal groups.
Only 10% of Republicans have to vote for Amnesty for this horrible bill to pass. So practically all democrats will vote for Amnesty (as 100% did for Obamacare) but 12% of Republicans vote for Amnesty and then most will blame Republicans. Well R’s stopped Bush’s Amnesty and get no credit. But only blame while democrats who want to make slaves us us get a pass. I hope I’m wrong but i think they are going to sneak this through. are we calling Congress?
from the Article:
Democrats are committed to amnesty with or without border security, and thus will vote virtually unanimously for immigration reform legislation that doesnt secure the border.
This means that such legislation can be enacted even if only about 10 percent of Republicans in the Senate and the House support it. Does anyone believe that congressional Republicans are 90 percent fool-proof on immigration reform (or anything else)? I dont.
I saw part of this show and DVRed it for tomorrow. Will post my first hand analysis after. Until then the post is above.
Rubio lost his credibility.
So Rubio is kissing up to these immigrants
The city I live in same thing. i see it overrun by foreign 3rd world vermin. And they vote democrat
this is all due to the 1965 immigration Act
When the fence gets built, we can talk about the other stuff. The fact that they won't build the fence just proves the point. Why is it imperative to add the other crap onto the Bill to build the fence? They are so anxious to have a 2000 page Bill with all the goodies, they really don't want to close the border.
Rubio will never see another dime from me...or the GOP....We sent him and he became a RINO .....Wonder what Sarah thinks..she help make his campaign.......
I saw a few minutes of that appearance and frankly I was shocked at how stupid and naive he came across. He looked like a dweeby little boy and sounded like an over prepped high school student debate team member who was loaded for bear with meaningless talking points.
Frankly I said to myself, “That’s Marco Rubio?” He had Zero charisma! Standing next to Hannity he looked so boyish. I can’t believe people ever considered him Presidential material.
Marco Rubio is not fit to stand in the shadow of Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz is a Giant. Marco Rubio is a political midget.
Aisles and GOPe pimping amnesty on Sean
Sad
To hell with Rubio. Either he really wants to add millions of dem voters or he has no belief his plan will pass and he’s pandering. Neither looks good so screw him.
"Vermin" is a historically loaded word.
You don't ever want to use it for anyone less heinous than, say, suicide bombers.
In today's world, we might use the term "vermin" to talk about Nazis or Nazi-like behavior, but not about their Jewish victims, or similar unwanted groups.
So those Boston bombers and London knife-murderers qualify as Nazi-like "vermin", but ordinary people just trying their best to be good Americans do not.
It might help to remember that, except for Native Americans, all our ancestors were considered 3rd world foreign "vermin" at one time or another.
And yet many overcame their ancestry, and today vote with Conservative Republicans! ;-)
When Rubio first came into the limelight, I liked him - liked what he said. Only, he just wasn’t saying “we need to ‘normalize’ these illegals” like his now constantly saying.
Further, his participation along with RYAN in those radio ads from Americans For a Conservative Direction, paid for by FaceBook’s Mark Zuckerberg that play constantly on Rush’s show are really pissing me off! If he’s done anything by allowing this, he’s assured no support from me, EVER.
Mr. Gang of Eight Rubio has made a big political overstep (possibly one he won’t recover from) and now he knows it.
There were several Democratic Senators that were demanding that the IRS harass the Tea Party groups. The IRS ended up doing as they were instructed. This harassment was a violation of thenCivil Rights of members of these organizations.
As I see it, these Sentaors were demanding the the Civil Rights of American citizens be violated. Why are there not law suits brought against these senators? A senate embroiled in Civil Rights Violation litigation would not be too focused on pushing through the Obama Anmesty Act of 2013.
A few months ago, Rubio stated his insistence for a security-first strategy... now he’s all about “accounting for the 11 million people who are already here” and at some later time find ways to secure the border, of which he still has yet to address how.
This, like all other “immigration legislation,” is designed to mainly satisfy Mexico and its agents in La Raza. The “security” component is only a dog bone thrown out to peel off enough conservative support to put it over the top. In all reality, under this legislation, securing of the border will not occur... ever.
But, taking this at face value, let’s allow for a moment that Rubio truly and idealistically believes this is the real deal, and it becomes law. What then happens when the dems, in an election year, say 2016, decide to pull an end-run and stand in front of cameras with reps from La Raza and other pressure group, stating they intend to “improve” this wonderful new law by “streamlining” the citizenship process, or offer welfare, housing and food stamp benefits, because “denial of these benefits is unfair?”
As always, so little forethought has been applied here.. but no worries.. Marco and his wife are on the Beltway cocktail party invite list, he gets to bask in praise from Harry Reid and the “media” treat him as their best bud.
The formula ought to be “shut borders now, talk about reform later.” But for some reason it’s just the other way around, and it’s easy to see why.
“I saw part of this show and DVRed it for tomorrow”
I saw about ten minutes and wanted to throw up—certainly don’t want to see rubio spewing his love for lawbreakers anymore.
