Homebuilders struggle to find workers
CNN Money ^ | June 3, 2013 | Les Christie

Sales of new homes are on a tear, but builders can't find enough workers to keep up with the demand.

After the housing bust, many workers left the building trade in droves, said Michael Fink, CEO of Leewood Real Estate Group in Trenton, N.J.

"A lot of our workers are immigrants and they went back to their home countries," he said. "Our subcontractors can't get people; they can't start on time; they can't get things done on time."

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) reported in March that 46% of its members say they have fallen behind schedule on finishing projects, 15% turned down jobs and 9% lost or canceled sales because they can't find enough workers.

That could have some big ramifications for the broader housing market. Housing starts fell sharply in April to 853,000 and experts project residential construction will grow by about 25% annually, according to the NAHB. At that pace, it could take more than four years to get back to early 2006 building levels, when housing starts peaked at 2.3 million, according to Census Bureau data.

Actually that’s a “jobs program” for the surplus of attorneys.

Yea, and just try to get them to work at a job that requires sweating and steel toe shoes.

” When the unemployment rate is < 3% and every able bodied person is off welfare, that’s when. And only if legally. “

YES!

Indeed, a huge portion of our workforce is now “disabled”.

The man has a problem. He can’t find labor *at the price he’s paying*.

Perhaps the solution is to pay the prevailing market wage?

Free market works both ways. I found that out when I needed to hire an accoustical engineer. You don't need them for long, but you pay, and how, for the time you do.

*Don’t believe this ploy now that we’re having another amnesty crammed down our throats!
Around the middle of the country, one will find illegal aliens working at all most all contractors’ formerly well paid jobs o American citizens! *

There’s over 7 million people out of work. Many are willing to work for minimun wage or slightly higher.

Something dosen’t smell right here.....

This is a real burner for me. Home builders in my home area gave all contracts to Illegals that did not need a state liscense to operate and that included 3 Plumbers, Electricians, and HVAC. The rest from roofing to concrete were rewarded because the Illegals cut price by 2/3 the actual bid of an American! And ran them all out of business!
I really couldn’t care less if any home builder in our area ever built another home or made another dime!

“just go to the nearest liberal arts college, and ask for recent graduates. they’re all unemployed.”

A good number of them will kill/cripple themselves just MEASURING something.

Of course this doesn't pass the smell test.

You are absolutely right about the millions of unemployed! Many are no longer on the unemployment list as they've either run out of unemployment and thus quit showing up for their "job interview" lists or they quit trying because what they did, no longer exists as a "job!"

I'm certain that roofers, concrete guys, rough-in crews and sheet rock installers would love to find jobs but there are no openings with illegal aliens all working in their fields.

Just as an anecdote, a home near me recently did a total makeover using a major contractor doing the job. Who showed up every day for work, Hispanics!

Now I don't know that they are here legally but for some, the contractor drove every day and dropped them off, no one spoke English, according to the neighbors who complained plenty about workers trashing up their yards with construction debris and garbage left over from their meals and loud music going on all hours.

I appreciate mine. Up until late last year, I was hearing from tech recruiters fairly regularly. Nowadays almost never.

You aren’t a graduate of a liberal arts program where you majored in “women’s studies” or “the black experience” and hoping for a cushy teaching position at some liberal college or university. You thin THOSE people are going to be satisfied carrying lumber and pushing a framing nailer?

“A lot of our workers are immigrants and they went back to their home countries,” he said.

Then he should leave too. What he’s saying is that American workers were driven out of the construction jobs by illegals before the crash.

Translation: Homebuilders are having trouble finding cheap illegal Mexican labor. They have all been assimilated enough into the welfare and entitlement system, they don’t give a crap about working for $10/hour. Oh, what will the builders do?

I have no sympathy for a frigging homebuilder whose success depends on having illegal Mexicans working for him to stay afloat. They’re just want to make more profit and not have to work as hard.
