The D.C. Council is preparing to allow almost any adult to legally officiate marriage ceremonies and is also moving closer to approving drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants.
Currently, only a member of the clergy or a judge legally can officiate at a wedding in the District, but that could soon change.
The D.C. Council Judiciary Committee approved legislation that would allow any adult -- for a small city fee -- to officiate at any marriage ceremony.
Council members say many couples forgo religious ceremonies and don't like the coldness of a courthouse.
And the union between two individuals should not necessarily have to be before a judge or before a religious order, Councilmember Anita Bonds said. A union between two individuals is just that.
Marrying couples still would need a license but have a close friend, family member or other person involved.
Councilmember called it another in many steps to provide equality for everyone who lives here.
Also at the council Thursday, a crowd urged the District to pass a law allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers licenses the same as citizens.
The proposal could conflict with federal rules, but supporters say it would help immigrants legally drive, get insurance, help families get to schools and cut down on job exploitation.
Drivers Licenses for Undocumented Workers
YEs so they do not suffer the repulsed look from citizens @ the DMV!
“two individuals should not necessarily have to be before a judge or before a religious order,
Interesting. I wondered when they would attack this principle that a marriage must be witnessed in order to actually be a marriage.
How about allow the groom to just say, three times, “I Marry You, I Marry You, I Marry You”, to make it official.
This will then complement a future divorce law that I’m sure would follow.
I think that is the way it is already in Alaska.
My niece was married in Alaska maybe 10 years ago by her brother who is otherwise an ordinary cotton picker. He had no qualifications for conducting the ceremony.
He on the other hand was married in a church
Why worry about that just pass a law where a peice of paper that says I have a drivers license and I am now married to John or Jane Doe, and have a homless guy sign it and spit on it for a seal, and a 5 dollar tip for some more ripple!
NEXT!!!!!!!!!
Sodom and Gomorrah with open boarders.
Time to feed the tree!
Not worth the paper it’s printed on outside of DC
Are those like squatters who are willing to share?
This is a major development. At one time, unless they knew of your religious organization, they would make you jump through all kinds of hoops to officiate weddings.
If they want to issue illegal aliens driver’s licenses that are recognized only in DC, that’s fine. But keep them confined to driving in that jurisdiction.
This would not be unprecedented. When I got my first driver’s license (in NYS c. 1960) we were issued ‘junior licenses’ at 16 that were valid only in daylight and only in NYS, except for NYC. We could not drive to CT or NJ or PA or in NYC. It allowed us to get to work/school. If we took driver’s ed and got a certificate, at 17 we could drive at night but again, not in NYC or other jurisdictions.
Nah more like thieves that break in your house and demand a place at the diner table, an allowance better than your children’s, and the master bed/bath as sleeping quarters.
....and a majority of Dems that think that’s OK along with a handful of supposedly Conservative Republicans who agree.
Hang em all. Feed the tree.
Missouri has a “Precious Moments” wedding chapel.
In Las Vegas, you can get Elvis impersonators to officiate.
I think the main thing is a need to make sure the licensee is qualified to attest that both parties consented of free will.
