Monsanto Executive Is Among World Food Prize Winners
The New York Times ^ | June 19, 2013 | ANDREW POLLACK

For the first time in its 27-year history, a prestigious award for enhancing the global food supply has gone to a creator of genetically modified crops, a top scientist at Monsanto. The choice is likely to add more heat to an intense debate about the role biotechnology can play in combating world hunger. Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, will share the $250,000 World Food Prize with two other scientists who helped devise how to insert foreign genes into plants: Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States.

The announcement was made in Washington on Wednesday, accompanied by a speech from Secretary of State John Kerry.

The prize was started in 1987 by Norman E. Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for bringing about the Green Revolution, which vastly increased grain output, and who thought there should be a Nobel Prize for agriculture. The award is given to those who improve the “quality, quantity or availability” of food in the world.

You show your proof.

I didn't make a claim about Monsanto receiving or not receiving taxpayer funds. You did.

Will you bother to provide proof of your claim, withdraw your claim or run away?

Way to bring this down to middle school lunch room rivalry level

Middle schoolers don't provide proof, and so far, neither do you. Bring the level back up, repair the damage you caused.

What is wrong with them?

My mother nearly died from a series of reactions to products contaminated with Starlink corn.

That's enough for me.

You’re a hoot. So if I provide you with the info you will change your mind? No. You can’t run around everywhere disagreeing with everybody and then insisting they prove anything to you. As I posted earlier I find my own info and make up my own mind. You need to put on your big boy pants and do the same. Otherwise I’ll just say that I disagree with you for disagreeing with me so now the burden of proof is on you. Have a nice life insisting that everything you dislike be proven to you. I hope people feed you correct info, otherwise things could get scary for you.

Change my mind about what? I'm against corporate subsidies, farm subsidies, sugar quotas, big government and poor science education.

As I posted earlier I find my own info and make up my own mind.

Excellent! You either found the "Monsanto getting taxpayer money" at a site that has good info, at a site that has bad info, or you made it up because it sounds good.

I'll wait for you to post your proof to see which one.

Or you'll run away.

I made silly claims and offered no proof? Where?

Run away now!

If you actually believe that then I as a duly qualified and licensed psychologist tell you that you may be suffering from a serious paranoid delusional disorder. This is no shit. You are very possibly a sick person. I would encourage you to seek professional evaluation at once. Unless you are just BSing for the helluvit.

You are joking, right? If you think that Monsanto is good for America and the world, could you please explain to me how. Thanks

Most conservatives are totally ignorant on the Monsanto issues.

Would you please enlighten this ignorant conservative? I'm all ears.

From link:

The World Food Prize has been criticized in the past for favoring industrial agriculture. The foundation that administers the prize has received contributions from companies, including a $5 million pledge from Monsanto in 2008

World Food Prize awarded to Monsanto is funded by Monsanto.

The World Food Prize

Looks like one out of eleven winners, since 2008, works for Monsanto. The Monsanto guy this year is one of three sharing the prize. Why isn't it closer to 100% of the winners? LOL!

They “bought” it in 2008, why such a small percentage of Monsanto winners since then?

Unethical. Wouldn't assume they are done manipulating and funding industry award. Especially with current global backlash.

Yeah, I'd be mad if I "bought" an award and it took them 5 years to give me 1/3rd of one.

The World Food Prize was conceived by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. Since 1986, The World Food Prize has honored outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food throughout the world. Laureates have been recognized from Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Cuba, Denmark, Ethiopia, India, Mexico, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United Nations and the United States. In 1990, Des Moines businessman and philanthropist John Ruan assumed sponsorship of The Prize and established The World Food Prize Foundation, located in Des Moines, Iowa.

From your nyt link...Monsanto gave foundation $5million in 2008 to give out awards. Current Monsanto award was $250,000. Very probably Monsanto is paying for their own 2013 award and PR stunt to prop up industry.
