That would be a 23% flat tax which seems reasonable.

Actually if you multiply what you made by 1.23 and write a check for that amount then you're being taxed at 123% of your income. While Obama would like that, I wouldn't. And even the 23% tax you mentioned would be a healthy increase in what I pay the feds now so you have a hard sell ahead of you.

True. The IRS is too filled with Liberal ideologues. Just a thought thrown out here, how about a non-idiological software program? Get the people out of it, and keep a finger on the off switch!

So, a family making $30,000 a year now pays $6,900 in taxes as opposed to ZERO now?

You’d get opposition from 47% of the country.

It would be good to see it passed. Just think, those 47% would quickly join with the Conservatives to greatly slash the size and scope of government. They would fight to get that down to 10%!!

But Alas, this is all a pipe dream...

No it isn't -- a flat tax has existed since long before Marx (Pharaoh [in the time of Joseph] taxed Egypt at 20%, IIRC)

Is it permissible to agree here? I happen to be a CPA with a Masters in Taxation and I wouldn’t personally be too happy if the IRS were abolished.

From a purely pragmatic perspective, larger portions of the agency would need to stay intact to finish existing audits and to allow the existing SOL’s to expire. THEN, we could potentially move to another system.

But I imagine the various State Society of CPA’s, the AICPA, The CMA’s and alllllll the various attorneys would be lobbying big time against this. Not to mention the ancillary businesses that make their living off the tax code (i.e CCH)

There are many ways to streamline the existing system to make it leaner, less obtuse, and more fair than it is today. And it doesn’t need to be a flat tax to be fair. There are serious issues with flat taxes that I think would be more punitive to lower/middle income families than the existing system.

Most “tax loopholes” involve complex corporate or various other structural entities. Small business and individual taxation is pretty straightforward. Not only would eliminating much of the corporate issues that exist make things simpler and more fair, it COULD actually increase tax revenue and create jobs. The US has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the WORLD. It’s no wonder people outsource jobs and park cash over seas.

Argh...sorry all, didn’t mean to rant, but this is a slow, fat curveball for me and I took a swing.....

Why 23%?

This percentage is what I've seen a lot of flat taxers propose.

The percentage in my example is beside the point. But a flat tax isn't.

I understand that.

My point was that the FAIR TAX is NOT a tax on INCOMES which is a major plank in the Communist Manifesto’s rules for controlling the behavior of the population of a nation.

May I assume that you DESIRE a tax on INCOMES vs. the FAIR TAX levy on CONSUMPTION and might enjoy having these cretins now in power dictating your behavior (i.e., running your life).

True. The IRS is too filled with Liberal ideologues.

That is true also, but not exactly my point. Tomorrow it may be filled with ideologues of another stripe, and as it exists, can only invite abuse, besides being unconstitutionally intrusive. "Income tax" as it is currently understood, needs to be abolished as a practice. The taxation on the accumulation of wealth is quite simply... un-American, and runs counter to all of our founding principles.
