Left-lane highway hogs could see fines double for failure to move over (NJ)

Left-lane hogs, beware.

You could be charged double for failing to keep right under a bill passed Monday by the Assembly.

Motorists who clog the left or center lanes instead of using them to pass another vehicle would see fines increase from between $50 and $200 now to between $100 and $300. The bill calls for $50 from each violation going toward signs reminding motorists who enter New Jersey about the state’s stay-right law.

“On behalf of road rage, I move the bill,” said Assemblyman Gilbert “Whip” Wilson (D-Camden), a co-sponsor of the measure, which passed 69-7.

Aside from drinking and driving, failure to keep right is perhaps the most hazardous action on roadways, said Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth), also a co-sponsor. …

We need this in Texas, if we don’t already have it.

The fines should quintuple if the lane camper has traffic queued behind them with open road out front.

Great. I was just thinking we need a few more (mother hen) laws on the books.

My youngest daughter refers to this kind of thing as "a first world problem".

I have always assumed these people, driving in the left lane AT the speed limit, believed they were teaching the rest of us a lesson.

In light of recent events, I've since concluded they are just stupid, selfish, and unaware like 51% of the American electorate.

I especially hate it when big trucks do it-- and then they have a sign on the back that says "Do not pass on the right".

Well, you know what, pal? If I have to pass you on the right, YOU'RE in the wrong lane. MOVE OVER!

“The a vehicle has to stay right except when overtaking another vehicle or preparing for a left turn.”

Seems the way this law is written would effectively remove a lane from the highway. You can only dart in and out of the third lane but can’t remain in the fourth lane for any period of time even if the third lane traffic is moving relatively slow? It’s a good idea but the way it’s written is going to be shooting fish in a barrel for a cop in the mood to write tickets.

About damned time! Especially Pennsylvanians, who routinely block the left lane on highways in NJ. Whenever I see a huge knot of traffic, and 1/2 a mile of open lane in front of some driver in the left lane, 9 times out of 10, they’ve got Pennsylvania plates. I really don’t know why that is, but PA drivers are the worst when it comes to having a clue about driving on multi-lane highways.

I applaud the cop in that video for using discretion to render a “learning” moment. From my recollection 15 years back however, most NJ highways are parking lots at certain choke points and stretches. I can see a potential abuse from “ambushing” to meet ticketing quotas.

An ambush is when you are in the passing lane and the cop is hanging in your blind spot and matching every speed change you make to prevent you from changing lanes. Speed up or slow down doesn’t matter, he has you pinned. In frustration after repeatedly changing speeds with my signal on, I gunned the gas and passed only to have the bubble gum machine blinking in my rear to give me a speeding ticket. True story.

Left lane pluggers are typically hard core leftists. Leftism is motivated by envy, which is a side-effect of vanity. There is nothing leftists won't envy: your automobile size, your speed, how much salt you use, the size of your big gulp. They seek to level the playing field by plugging up traffic, making everyone's speed fair and equal. The cops do not appreciate the drop in highway robbery targets though.

The greatest hazard to navigating are the New York drivers,
50 mph and in the center lane, completely oblivious to any thing around them...

I don’t care if you’re going faster than the speed limit or not. If you’re not passing something (and the road is not congested in a way that justifies using all the lanes), get out of the left hand lane.

Oh, never mind. I’ve given up all hope of the state of driving on our roads ever improving. Not when we give out driver’s licenses to the barely competent, and almost all enforcement is of the (excessively low, in many cases) speed limits.

Yep! Also note, New Yorkers are not required to signal lane changes, New Jerseyans signal after the fact and only out-of-staters signal before changing lanes. That was my experience so it must be in the NJ driver's manual.

“effectively remove a lane from the highway”

That’s the first thing I thought. The citations should be for those who don’t move over when they can, meaning, someone is actually coming up behind them.

I’m driving through Jersey next week and will see how this works in practical terms.

“Pass only on the left and yield the left lane to faster cars” is standard practice in Germany on the Autobahn. Don’t know if that is by law or custom but it works really, really well.

I wish every state would adopt it.
