Where have you been? About 15% of the adults in this country are illiterate. And 21% cannot read at the 5th grade level (which includes the 14% above)

It would be interesting to know how much was paid for 12-13 years of public school education for this girl. Was she eligible for and did she receive special ed services, or were her competencies perceived as within the norm at her school district?

Not as uncommon as you think

My wife is a high school teacher. Most of the freshman in certain areas can not read, write, or count.

Many hard working people around the world are illiterate. My grandfather signed with an X and did quite well for himself in the 20th century.

So I don’t care that she is illiterate. I do care that she is willing to lie under oath. I do care that she likely lied further on the witness stand.

If she can’t read in cursive why did she claim she wrote that note?

How dare you call her illiterate! She can read perfectly well. She just can’t, um, read cursive.

She said she could not read cursive, which for her age is actually becoming common. Schools are dropping cursive instruction. What this means is someone older wrote the letter.

“”””Illiterate. In this day and age, really?”””””

Not illiterate. Just really really stupid. I mean barely-manage-to-feed-herself stupid.
Kids nowadays don’t study cursive. I think it will get to a point where they don’t even write on paper at all. Just texting lazy textspeak. I’ll bet she can send a text on her Obamaphone in 2 seconds flat. Of course, it will be textspeak jibberish that doesn’t resemble English words but thats how she learned how to ‘holla’.

Sad sign for America’s future.

“Illiterate. In this day and age, really?”

The dumbing down of American kids has been equal opportunity for decades.

It is often done under the guise of new math, new English or new whatever.

A younger relative in his 40’s got hit by the new math in mid school and high school. He got bored with hs, dropped out and took his GEDs and finished in months. He got a job as a pizza delivery guy was getting short changed by the customers because he couldn’t do basic math. His dad gave him a pocket calculator and the short changing stopped in a week. After a couple of months he didn’t need the calculator and could reverse an attempted short changing. His past and present jobs require math all day, and he is excellent.

Flash forward a few decades and this young man’s nephew was labeled a math idiot/dummy. It turned out that by his 4th grade, he had 3 new maths. One of his so called new math teacher was a teacher for his older sister. His older sister told all of us how often in the morning, that teacher would be in her class room sobbing because she had to present another new math lesson. His sister would explain to the teacher how to present the stuff. When asked how she could do it, the young lady said she was solid in math, the old math, and figured out how to present the phony baloney new math. She recently got an award for being one of the top math students in that middle school.

The parents of the young ‘math dummy’ got him enrolled in Kumon, After School Self-learning Program for Kids | Kumon Math ...
http://www.kumon.com/ - 24k - Cached - Similar pages
Kumon is the world’s largest after-school math and reading program. Discover how your child can achieve academic success with Kumon math and reading ...

Within a couple of months of Kumon, he went from math dummy to acing math tests up to 2 grades higher than his level. He has been in the annual math Olympics since then.

No excuse for the lying ugly witch in this trial. However, she and other young Americans across our land are being dumbed down each day in school.

“Illiterate. In this day and age, really?”

...and back in the early 1980s we conservatives used to joke that half our high school graduates couldn’t read their diplomas - It look like 30 years later it’s no longer a joke.

Illiterate. In this day and age, really?

My company had a big problem with workers unable to read hazmat safety precautions and MSDS sheets. All of the applicants are now screened for literacy. On testing day, about five applicants will remain to complete the hiring process from a pool of 15 - 20. Most of them are black.

I’ll be 28 later in the year, and I went to school with a few kids that had difficulty reading.

Out of the inner cities of America...probably forty percent of the kids are finishing up high school with a 4th grade reading ability. It may be that their parents smoked a lot of dope....maybe kids are less bright than forty years ago...or maybe it’s always been that way. Doesn’t matter.

About six years ago....some high school math teacher came out in California and admitted that he finished high school with great math ability, but couldn’t read, period. He went to college, played baseball, and got a degree in math....but could not read. He was offered a job at a school to teach math, and did that for almost a decade...with no ability to read. He finally convinced himself that he had to have this skill, and went back to learn how to read. He tricked the system, and got that far in life...with no ability to read....so it’s possible.
