...That will give the Golden State the highest gas tax in the nation -- nearly 72 cents a gallon.
The increase was approved by the five-member state Board of Equalization in February under a complicated "gas tax swap" that eliminated most sales taxes on fuel purchases in favor of a higher excise tax.
Sales tax revenues fund local government programs, while the state excise tax on gas funds highway and mass transit projects throughout the state.
"A tax increase without the usual 67 percent supermajority vote? The anti-tax crowd must be having kittens," said motorist Diane Berger, of San Jose, who owns an electric Chevy Volt and says she seldom even looks at prices at the pump.
The Legislature gave the tax board the authority to raise the excise tax by a simple majority vote. If a tax had gone before voters as a special tax, it would have needed a two-thirds majority.
The average tax on a gallon of gas is 49 cents nationwide. New York has the second-highest with 68.9 cents, according to the American Petroleum Institute,

You don’t have to be clueless to live in CA but it makes it tolerable.
It’s a good thing that the state’s wetbacks *steal* their gas...or get a special EBT card to pay for it...otherwise,they’d be pi$$ed.
Much of BART's subsidies come from gas taxes and, today, BART workers went on strike to squeeze higher pay and benefits out of taxpayers.
Seems the law “makers” are the most flagrant law breakers now in America. Certainly is a “change” our illegal immigrant Marxist Muslim Prez has brought us.
We’re Number 1!
Excelsior....Ever Upward...Whoever thought it would be about taxes!!
the democrats in Sacramento have taken all the tax payer’s blood and now they’re coming after our bones. Not to fret for the state’s elected (appointed) elite though, they get free cars and free gas paid for by, you guessed it, the TAX PAYERS.
When will productive, achieving Californians “go Galt” in a big way?
“We’re all enjoying a ‘golden shower’ here in the Golden state!”

And they keep on voting for DemocRats,
The eeevil oil companies would be ecstatic if they were making 70+ cents per gallon.
Rather than raise the state income tax, which may actually get the attention of the low information voters, the powers that be raise ‘fees’ in many other avenues.
So glad I got out of there 2 years ago...
Many already have. Unfortunately they learned nothing and only spread the disease of liberalism wherever they go. Example: Colorado and New Mexico used to be fairly conservative states.
I would move out tomorrow if I could find a job elsewhere.
And they are vilified for making $0.30 a gallon.
