Zimmerman defense closing argument: ‘Pure, unadulterated innocence’ of client

SANFORD, Fla. — There’s so much that still isn’t known about what happened on that dark, rainy night in February 2012, George Zimmerman’s defense attorney told jurors Friday in a hushed courtroom here.

Speaking in a soothing, conversational tone, attorney Mark O’Mara urged jurors not to make assumptions about the defendant accused of killing an unarmed teenager named Trayvon Martin and not to try to “fill in blanks” or “connect dots.”

The only conclusion jurors could reach about his client after hearing testimony for three weeks, O’Mara said, is “innocence. Pure, unadulterated innocence.”

Minutes into his closing argument, O’Mara walked over to the defense table, and Zimmerman, dressed in a dark blazer and tie, stood. The defendant held his head high and gazed directly at the jury with a neutral expression on his face.

O’Mara placed his hand on the shoulder of Zimmerman, a humanizing gesture. O’Mara’s demeanor contrasted with the style of assistant state attorney Bernie de la Rionda, who often shouted and spoke in impassioned tones during prosecution closing arguments on Thursday.

Prosecutors, O’Mara said, had created a false caricature of Zimmerman, portraying him as an overzealous neighborhood watch volunteer. The prosecutors want jurors to believe that Zimmerman was “a crazy guy walking the neighborhood looking for people to harass,” O’Mara said.

But, the defense attorney added, there’s no evidence to back that portrayal. Instead, he said, Zimmerman merely spotted Martin walking through the neighborhood while the defendant was on his way to Target to pick up food to make his lunches for the week.

There is also no evidence, O’Mara asserted, that Zimmerman had “ill will, spite or hatred” for Martin, the elements necessary for him to be convicted of second-degree murder.

Zimmerman will not go free. The feds will make sure of it. The rule of law is dead in the US. All that remains is political revenge and persecution, and the desire by the body politic to appease their foot soldier constituents. I would be surprised if Zimmerman is still alive by year’s end.

Mark O’Mara was absolutely brilliant.

He did an excellent job and kept his presentation quite interesting. He even poked a brief jab at Zimmerman's weight gain. He covered all the angles and quite a synopsis of the whole trial in this capsule of time.

I certainly hope that many here on FR are capturing all those Trayvon Martin images for the upcoming Civil Trial which Crump will push the Martin family into filing.

I am pretty sure that such images can be shown in a civil lawsuit.

Wait until the jury finds out what they weren’t told during the trial. If they convict Zimmerman, they’re going to have to live with the blood of an innocent man on their hands forever which really isn’t fair either.

seems to think he should have yelled and screamed....because they are all pushy ass New York Prosecutors..

You dont talk to 6 women jurors that way. O'Mara sealed the deal IMO-- I think Zimmerman goes free.

Did O'Mara ever rebut the lie the prosecutor told in his closing argument yesterday that Zimmerman told his friend to tell his wife "I killed him" when the friend actually testified Zimmerman said tell her "I shot him"?

“I am pretty sure that such images can be shown in a civil lawsuit.”

Any idea of who the deep pockets are that Chump is going to try and go after?

Here’s the easy way to look at it. If trayvon was on top of george when George fired, blood would have dripped onto George’s jacket. Is there blood?

his modulation and timing were superb!

tying the may uses of the word REALLY....together at the very end of his presentation was a masterstroke.

Indeed. The judge will give Zimmerman 25 years for ‘manslaughter’, then the jury goes “WHAT? Ooooops, sorry.. We didn’t know the sentence for manslaughter would be so long.”

I liked the argument when O’mara brought out a chunk of concrete. I wish he had carried it over to the bailiff and raised it over his head, and then said“does anyone doubt this deputy could shoot me if I threatened to hit him over the head with this?”

hey, what’s up with this pic of Trayvon, looking like he’s the baddest gang banger in town? I thought he was a fresh faced innocent looking 13 year old boy, from the pics used by the MSM:

Maybe it's my ego, but I could have done a better job than O'Mara. All O'Mara needed to do was FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF FOLLOWING THE LAW in this case.. His sliding scale of 'not guilty' verdicts was brilliant, but he seemed a bit unprepared on his entire presentation.

Could he have gotten away with telling the jury that a manslaughter verdict is up to 30 years in prison?? Would he have been slapped with contempt for that? HE SHOULD HAVE SAID IT then dealt with the consequences later.
