After a tradition of some 40 years of subsidizing local taxes, Gov. John Kasich and Republicans in the Ohio House and Senate applied the brakes.
Local governments and schools heading for the ballot in November to ask voters to support new or replacement levies will have to tell them that the price tags attached will be higher than they were previously told.
The taxpayer will pay the entire tab for any new taxes approved.

What a nonsensical stupid program. If voters approve these things they ought to be on the hook for the real cost.
I personally object to property taxes on the principle that it is impossible to truly “own” any property subject to such taxes. At least the British are honest about such levies and they refer to them as ‘rent’ because if they are not paid to your landlord then you find out who truly OWNS your property!

I absolutely agree.
But the idea of a property tax made much more sense in the early days of the republic. That is before income taxes and other taxes.
In the early days of our republic only those with property paid any taxes at all and only those with property could vote. There for only those who paid taxes could vote and therefore only those who paid taxes could vote for those who spent those taxes or could raise taxes.
Now any citizen (theoretically) who hasn’t committed a felony can vote for any socialist that trip his fancy.
I am guessing this is a copycat idea of Nixon’s revenues sharing program.
It is easier for the State to raise taxes than local governments.
When I was a kid, they would teach that the BIG difference between Capitalism and Communism was the private ownership of land. To find out who REALLY owns your land, don’t pay your property taxes, and wait a bit*. So, this is a distinction without a difference.
*except, of course, in Detroit. There, paying property taxes is optional, and only for rich people anyway.
Seems like the Beast is a well fed animal. As stated in the article Lucas County received 38.6m in 2000 increased to 62.3m by 2012. It’s never enough, though.
Total GDP is 16.2T, Local, State and Federal taxes take 6.4T of that. Throwing money at a problem is not the answer. We are not getting a return on investment in education, that’s for sure.
And yet STILL another example of why NOT to give any authority, power, taxes, etc. to gov’t.
Gov’t ALWAYS begins with MAY and VOLUNTARY, and not too much long after becomes SHALL and MANDATORY.
Regardless if it was ‘from the beginning’; it is and always will be a BAD idea and way to pay for services, let alone the whole ‘owning property’ facade.
Let’s not even start with the Unconstitutional ‘social services’ anyone can vote themselves.
I agree! Myself I totally oppose property taxes as they render ownership of property meaningless and I also oppose income taxes in that they are a prior claim on one’s earnings. Meaning that the government gets to take their share of your money before you get to have your share.
Just like how sharecroppers had to give the first part of their harvest to ‘Massa’.

I have a problem with paying property taxes, say, for schools when I don’t have ANY children; let alone the quality being SH!T.
Do away w/ property taxes. Make the property owner pay for those services they USE. All else are paid by the individual.
state funding for local property tax levies does not help taxpayers in the long run; both state AND local taxes keep rising as local spending restraint is not encouraged, in fact it is defeated by the subsidies
the other error of state subsidies to offset local tax levies is that over time the level of local control is eroded as state mandates, restrictions and financial oversight on the local jurisdictions increase with the state subsidies
all levels of government need to de-unionize government workers and set government wages and benefits by law, not by negotiation, setting benefits and salaries to average no higher than the median for benefits and salaries in the private sector in the related jurisdiction - the government class should not be a priveleged class earning on average salaries and benefits higher than the median of the citizens, in the private sector, whose taxes are paying for them
that would be the first place to start
the second thing to do would be ending/closing all current government pension plans that are defined benefit pension plans and putting all new employess on defined contribution pension plans
the third thing to do would be to end “paid” sick days “owed” for unused sick days, period, and ending “paid” vacation days “owed” for unused vacation days;
a “paid” sick day should be ONLY days absent for a legitimate health reason, period, and paid vacation days should always be on a use-em or lose-em basis
these things should not be “negotiable”
While I agree with your model, it would immediately result in vast numbers of parents turning to home schooling, and shutdown of public schools (which also isn’t a bad idea.)

It would also destroy the NEA and the Unions power-hold upon education; people paying the bills directly will NOT put up w/ the low standards/quality, strikes, etc.
The other benefit is the lower taxes when all those ‘fancy’ schools and buses aren’t needed.
Just think of the empowerment of the parent vs. teacher. Don’t like what they are doing, tell ‘em ‘You’re fired’ or move them into another class/study group/school/etc. which would abound and compete for the $$.

Hmmmm, it has so many good results, as you mention. Actually, it may be the only real control we could have at home (town), rather than in distant governments like state and DC. It would be a ground-up change to the entire educational mess. But it must be a state law that only property owners pay for school funding? Those that live in apartmnts don’t pay squat.
