2 children dead after python escapes N.B. pet store

Two children died after a python got into an apartment in Campbellton, N.B., RCMP say.

"Police are investigating two sudden deaths of two young boys," Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh said Monday.

It's believed the snake escaped from a pet store called Reptile Ocean. The victims were boys aged five and seven. They were visiting a friend in the apartment above the store, police said in a statement released Monday.

Initial information indicates the snake got into the ventilation system and then into the apartment upstairs.

"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said, noting that autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow in Saint John.

I heard something like that same weight, and I’ve read varying reports from about 13-16 feet. I’ve also read that the snake was known as mean-tempered.

They will “destroy the snake” first “out of concern” of course.
Then, if the coroner is on the ball, they will find something inconsistent.
THEN will come the “Uh oh” moment, if we ever hear of it.

I’m always uncomfortable saying the government should make more laws against this that or the other.

<< They could clean them out with a simple bounty system. Pay per pound and have open hunting. >>

Get the Swamp People on it!

Seriously, anyone who has one of these snakes is certifiably insane. I just don’t get it. At least with mean dogs, they have some love for their owners. But when was the last time you heard a python owner say, “I think I’ll go snuggle with my snake. He’s just so cuddly and full of love!!”

Salamander, i love ya dude, but you’re certifiable. The only snakes i don’t shoot on sight are king snakes and grass snakes. Keep yours away from me!

Your scenario sounds depressingly probable. I really hope that the coroner is competent.

I understand that they have only the basic function/reaction part of the brain (reptile brain) and that they’re incapable of “so cuddly and full of love.”

The article said that the owners will imagine they see such things in certain actions of their snakes, but that snakes are simply seeking a warm location (or measuring them as a food source. :>)

We will see.
Have had our share of incompetent coroners over this way.

From another forum

Here is something interesting that was posted up on cornsnakes.com. The store owners name is John-Claude Savoie....

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/nb/news-no...-00134-eng.htm

Accused of sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, assault, uttering threats, and pointing a firearm

Could be a coincidence, however.

Yeah, there’s probably dozens of guys named Jean-Claude Savoie in that town.

/s

Also the store was formerly a “zoo” but lost it’s accreditation due to poor husbandry, the neighbors had a petition going to shut it down [again, poor husbandry] and the snake was illegal due to size regulations.

I’n sure this is a coincidence but this comes right before a vote is to be held for yet another draconian chunk of legislature.

You have an interesting signature.

Indeed.

An article I just read claims the snake fell through the ceiling. They made it sound like the ceiling collapsed under the weight & that it fell on the sleeping boys & then strangled them.
All of this without notice from others in the apartment.
If a snake is frightened from a fall, will it strangle out of an instinct of self defense?

They bite out of self defense, not ‘strangle’.

Screen grab [maybe it's being 'sanitized' already]

screen grab is a great idea.

If that’s the current Jean Claude Savoie of python fame, then that suggests what really happened is most likely not what is being reported.

And here's a Rock Python from his FB page in late 2012;

If that is *the* snake, going by the size of compared to the plastic sweater box behind it, I can't see it 'strangling' a kid.

It's not really a very big snake.

Many have mentioned that the snake was said to be "sluggish" by people on the scene due to temperatures.

When a snake is cold, it's pretty much harmless.

They simply cannot move very well.

Entertainers who use snakes in their acts know this and 'chill' their animals before going onstage.

It was just dumb luck that I hadn’t closed the page, yet.

Think I’ll just leave it open for a while, just in case.
