Coal country begs Obama for mercy as hundreds of coal plants ready for closing

Coal industry lobbyists and politicians have been urging the Obama administration to ease up on its regulatory agenda and craft carbon dioxide emission rules that would allow the coal industry to survive.

All the while, reports indicate that hundreds of coal plants are slated to be shut down in the coming years.

The unveiling of President Obama’s plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants earlier this summer stoked the fears of coal supporters who have already been hit hard by stricter environmental regulations.

However, the industry is not going down without a fight.

Coal lobbyists met with White House officials at the end of July, the Hill newspaper reports, to ask the administration to consider a plan that would allow new coal plants to be built.

Earlier this year the Obama administration put forward rules that would have effectively banned building new coal plants, unless they utilized carbon capture technology.

“In Kentucky, coal is not just an energy source, it’s a way of life,” reads a letter from 50 Kentucky Republican and Democratic state legislators, urging Obama to reconsider new rules for carbon emissions limits. “In Kentucky alone, the loss would measure in the billions of dollars — both from declines in the industry and what are predicted to be steep increases in energy costs.”

Me too. That is what the idiots voted for. He plainly stated what he intended to do before he was elected the first time. This was probably the only time he has told the truth since he has been occupying the White House. now that are finally getting what they voted for, the idiots are crying. Let them cry. There is no cure for stupidity. When the policies they voted for kill them, maybe the survivors can start anew and rebuild.

Get a map out. Plot where coal mines and coal fired plants are. Get another map of the 2012 election results out. Compare them, NO WE DID NOT ELECT the SOB. Even if every union member voted for him (in our area a majority DID NOT) its ok by you to double the cost of electricity for everyone for the wrong votes of less than 1% (coal and coal plant workers who voted obama)? Real smart.

By the way I'm forced to be a Teamster and have not missed a due in 27 years. I despise unions but have no choice. Union leadership loves obama not rank and file. I'll put my conservative credentials up against yours any day. Don't presume to lecture me about the ills of unions.

A good portion of California’s electricity comes from COAL FIRED GENERATING PLANTS in Utah and Nevada.

The coal miner’s unions should have gone full out to defeat Obama instead of merely refusing to endorse him. Sometimes you get what you deserve.

This is exactly the same bigotry I saw George Wallace and Lester Maddox direct toward blacks back when I was a young man. The end result this time will likely be everyone hating everyone else who doesn’t look, talk and act like themselves.

At least George Wallace later in life apologized.

I recall WV voted Blue.

In the 2012 presidential election, West Virginia cast 412,406 votes (or 62.3 percent) for Mitt Romney, versus 234,925 votes (or 35.5 percent) for Barack Obama.
