P&G Voluntarily Recalls Limited Quantity of Dry Pet Food Due to Possible Health Risk

CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

My cat has thrown up three times in three days. He gets 1/2 can Fancy Feast cod, sole and shrimp every morning and Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken crunchies the rest of the day. Will have to go look on their sites to see whether they are having trouble too.

Anyone have experience with Katz-n-Flocken?

Just got off the phone with my son - they had one of the listed items but their “best by date” was different. So they will buy another brand next time out. Their 3 cats aren’t fussy. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for the info. My cats don’t eat ANYTHING from these companies because of the previous problem of their using toxic Chinese ingredients. However, I just posted the original news article and the recall list to my Maine Coon listserv and all my cat/dog-owning friends.

Spunky, one of our two terriers, died last weekend after several days of diarrhea and vomiting. Vet couldn’t diagnose him. While we don’t buy any of the recalled brands (we feed them Royal Canine and meal scraps), the mailman, milkman and lawn care workers give them treats (they love to beg for food anyone who comes by). I wonder now whether it was any of the treats he got.
