A witness said he saw an explosion BEFORE the aircraft crashed. Possible engine fire?

Heck, we’ve got lots of “spare parts”. LOL.

Arguably only viable in a low-threat environment.
Probably wouldn’t be survivable against modern air defense systems.
Like the B-52’s, good for counter-insurgency under certain conditions, or against unsophisticated opponents.

Even worse than $300,000,000... NOT REPLACEABLE and nothing in the pipeline to replace it.

Actually they mothballed some of them. They could bring one out to replace this one. Out of the 100 that were built, this would be the 10th one to be lost.

The A-10 is so ugly, it's beautiful.

In the late 60’s we lived on a ranger station a few miles from Broadus, MT. Once every week or two one of those huge bombers, probably a B-52, would fly over at a very low level just above the hills. You could feel the vibrations long before it flew over. They were so low you could almost hit them with a spitwad.

Bird ingested into engine / turbine failure - flames can shoot out the back of the engine unnaturally.

So, yeah, “engine fire” of sorts.

I was stationed at Ellsworth. I miss watching the bombers take off and land. If you can consider watching something to be fun, that was it.

“Well thee goes a billion dollars...”

Didn’t know they haven’t yet retired that piece of junk. The Bone was flawed from ground up.

Lets see..
Faster than the AV-8B
Stealthier than the AV-8B
Better armed than the AV-8B...

I am glad the Marine Corps does not share your pessimism.

“The B-1B Bomber was my plane back in the day. (Avionics, not a pilot).” Even in the good ol’ days the Bone had a poor safety record.

A-10s fly over Lake of the Ozarks nearly every week.

Highlight of the Van Nuys airshow for me was a tossup between the B1 and the F-15... Brother lived nearby, timed summer vacations to be able to be on hand if not for the airshow, but the day of departure.

We set up at the end of the runway... forget the road, Saticoy maybe... and had all these planes coming right at us.

F-15s would take off... hug the deck at about 20’ and then rotate out just about as the crossed the road.

Same deal with the B1... but with the B1 it was about the loudest thing I have ever experienced... you could feel the heat radiating down on you as the aircraft pitched up after passing. Amazing, amazing, AWE INSPIRING aircraft.

I was on ABNCP alert next to the runway when the B1 crashed on landing in 1989. It was at night and it was raining flaming composite as the front end came to a halt halfway down the runway.

That one was pilot error, we’ll see on this one.
