Now that the Supreme Court has decided that ObamaCares mandate to buy health insurance is a tax, will the IRS be able to collect it?
Generally speaking, if you owe the IRS, it will get the money from youwith the possible exception of the ObamaCare tax. Though ObamaCares individual mandate imposes a tax on people who do not purchase government-approved health insurance, the law explicitly neuters the IRSs ability to collect the tax.
Bizarre? Yes. And it matters. If policymakers expect uninsured young people to buy health insurance when it is even more expensive than it is today, the threat of serious consequences for not doing so must be real. Yes, the threat that the IRS might come after you if you do not do what you are told looks real at first glance. But Democratic politicians, fearing public backlash for making the mandate too intrusive, pulled its teeth.

That's pretty much what I intend to do anyway, even if it's not true. They can only kill me once.

“As far as the IRS goes not paying taxes is one thing. Lying on your tax return to avoid taxes takes you into a whole new ballgame.”
True enough: file the form honestly and pay later has always been the advice for those who find themselves short. The point of the article is that collecting those taxes will be a whole different kettle of fish.
“The way the article sounds takes the evil out of Obamacare. I think these articles will come out to make us feel good about Obamacare.”
Look at the organization that put out the article and draw your own conclusions.
One way or other Obama will get your money. Mandatory insurance premium or a fine.
Catch 22.
If you are due a refund the Obamacare tax will be deducted from it.
And if you get seriously injured and find yourself in the hospital, what then? Are you going to pay a hospital bill that could go into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, or are you going to have others (i.e., taxpayers) cover it?
Believe it. It's been reported elsewhere -- in several more familiar media. The gist of the story's been circulating for over a year.
Will you please add me to your ping list? (Not that we will ever be ruled by socialists, mind you... just a theoretical exercise.)
You’re on the list. Of course we talk strictly in the abstract when discussing socialism.
It always amazes me how people are addicted to their insurance. What they don’t understand is that insurance is the problem not the answer. Insurance was never intended to be what people expect of it today. Of course, the insurance companies are more than willing to provide the services that are available today providing that you give them all of your money. Many don’t realize how much their insurance really costs especially those on the government dime. We need to remember that there are people that pay cash or set up a payment plan if needed that get along just fine.
That’s just way too creepy,
I think everyone should game the system as much as possible. For example, if you want to buy an exchange policy, simply pay the first month and not pay the next three months. You will still be considered covered for 90 days after your last payment. That way, you would only have to make 3-4 payments per year instead of 12.
The other thing you could do if you need some healthcare in a short time is pay for insurance for a couple of months and go and get all your MRIs and outpatient services. Then, go off insurance and pay the fine, or claim a hardship.
As people game the system, insurance companies will lose money and drop out of the exchanges. This will create the optimal conditions for implosion.
What you describe is what Obama, Reid and Pelosi have always planned and dreamed of. When the system implodes they have a single payer total government only scheme ready to install. Insurance companies not being able to stay in business, not being able to insure, not being able to make a profit is exactly the precursor to single player government only healthcare. The objective was to destroy the private insurance industry by first luring them into, then mandating them into, their own destruction. Then nothing is left standing but the government.
the whole idea is to adjust witholding so you
get zero(or close to it) refund.
don’t get insurance till you need it.
on the other hand, I think us Republicans
should encourage the sick to get the best Obamacare,
and visit the hospital as often as possible.
everybody wins
It’s true that an implosion of 0-care would create a vacuum, but single payer would still require legislation, unless of course we have a total dictatorship. A vacuum would at least create an opportunity to push for free market approaches and more decentralized state based initiatives.
The third party payment structure, whether through government or private insurance inflates the true cost of health care. If the consumer assumed a greater proportionate share of health care costs, prices would inevitably decline.
Shoot, by the time the Obama Democrats and the Boehner Republicans get done, there won’t be any money left for the IRS to collect anyway.
That pic is going to give me nightmares.
Let them try!
