The following are snide and hopefully humorous but true comments from a charter member of the Peanut Gallery, Publius! ;-)

I wear two wrist watches. I wear one on my left wrist and one on my right wrist. Don't laugh or think that I am weird. Well, the truth is that I am weird but don't think it! There are three very specific reasons for wearing two watches. So, you think I'm lying just for the sake of this post, huh? Well, here is the proof:

I'll list those reasons in inverse order of importance:

01. ) The two watches that I wear are both battery-operated watches. When I wore wind-up watches my lazy mind always forgot to wind them. I simply cannot wear kinetic/self-winding watches. I am much too lazy and do not move enough to wind the watches. The only time that I move my right arm is when I reach for and click the mouse, use the keyboard or when I have a fork in my hand. I do believe that there is a strange phenomenon going on here. It seems that each time I have a fork in my hand and raise my arm, my mouth opens. I happen to think that there are some tele-kinetic sources of energy happening with the magnetism in the metal of the fork but I cannot prove this.

But anyway, back to reason one for two watches. Each battery in the watches lasts for roughly one year. I have them 'staggered' so that when one battery dies, the other is the 'back-up' device and will last for roughly six months. That gives me six months to be lazy until I have to force myself to go to the jeweler to replace the dead battery. Six months is a good time-cushion.

02. ) The watch on my left wrist is set to Central Daylight Time. The watch on my right wrist is set to Central Standard Time. In that way I can be even more mentally lazy and do not have to keep remembering, "Spring Forward"/"Fall Backward" or "Spring Backward"/"Fall Forward" or "Jump Through Hoops" or whatever it is! But.....you want to ask, "Well, what happens when one of the batteries dies and you do not remember which wrist is in the correct time zone?" Well, while I shall admit to super-intelligence and having a very mathematical mind, I can add or subtract 1 to compensate for the various time zones but my lazy mind does not like to do it so that I rely on the second watch. HA! You thought you had me, didn't you?

03. ) Now, for the third, final and most important reason that I wear two watches which is really quite simple but very profound at the same time. How important, you ask? My life depends upon it:

MY LOVELY WIFE GAVE BOTH OF THESE WATCHES TO ME!

I DEFY ANY MAN TO REFUSE TO WEAR SOMETHING THAT HIS WIFE GAVE TO HIM.....NO MATTER HOW UGLY, NON-FITTING, COLOR-MISMATCHING OR RIDICULOUS IT LOOKS ON YOU! YOU HAVE TO WEAR IT OR SUFFER THE DIRE AND SEVERECONSEQUENCES!

This is one of the most famous sonatas of Beethoven and in fact in all the world. It’s the Piano Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, known as the Pathetique Sonata. It prompted Franz Schubert to write a sonata in the same key 30 years later using much of the same musical material but taking it in a totally different direction. It prompted Billy Joel to write a song. It is absolutely required for every classical pianist. I played it when I was 10.

It was written in 1798 and dedicated to Prince Carl von Lichnowsky. Those following this series will remember that Price Carl provided Lou with a roof over his head, money, and functioned as a sort of grandfather figure. This man had a distinguished history in his own right.

Prince Carl had been a Masonic brother of Mozart and introduced Beethoven to the craft of Freemasonry. This international movement spent its time working the rough edges off its members, and many Americans, to include Franklin, Hamilton and Washington, were Masonic brothers. Beethoven had a lot of rough edges to work off, and Freemasonry was only partially successful. Lou was a tough person to get along with.

This sonata is in three movements, and it is the first to deploy a grave introduction. (It’s the same meaning in English and Italian, just different pronunciation.) Lou starts it in 4/4 with a set of dissonances reminiscent of Bach. Each bar resolves itself differently. You don’t have any real sense of key until the end of the introduction where Lou sends you into a first subject in C minor marked allegro di molto e con brio in 2/2. That’s “very fast and with enthusiasm” for those of you who are culturely deprived. (Heh-heh-heh.) He uses a transitional passage in E-flat minor to lead into the second subject in E-flat Major. Watch the right-over-left crossovers!
At 3:37, he repeats the exposition.
At 5:21, he starts his development by bringing back the introduction, but in G minor. The development itself tears through a number of keys in a very short period of time.
At 6:57, he recaps. By transitioning through a whole other series of keys, he maneuvers his second subject into C minor, which totally alters the mood. He brings back the introduction with its questioning dissonances and silences, but wraps it up with a bang.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, first movement

The second movement is in ternary format, A-flat Major, 2/4 time, and is marked adagio cantabile, “at rest and songlike”. This isn’t a conversation with God but a love song. No wonder it inspired Billy Joel.
At 2:52, the central panel changes to triple time within 2/4 and moves from A-flat minor to E Major in just a few bars. But then the harmonies cloud, and he brings back the first section, maintaining that triple time underlay in the left hand. It ends sweetly.

second movement

The finale is a rondo in 2/2, C minor and is marked simply allegro. At 4:30, he teases you into thinking he is going to close it contentedly in the major, but like a good horror movie the body rises from the dead to knife you in the back in the last bars. (BWAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!)
