Tattoo regret becomes the latest trend

A drunken night out in Sydney's Kings Cross left Rachel Vance with a tattoo on her arm - two tiny stars and a spade. The experience cost her $100 and she regretted it instantly.

Louise Smith got five tattoos at different stages throughout her twenties. One was a butterfly, another commemorated a friend's death and the rest just seemed like a good idea at the time. Until now.

Both women are part of an emerging trend where people are paying upwards of $100 a pop per session of laser treatment to remove tattoos. Oh, and apparently it hurts like hell.

"I got them done when I was very young and definitely believed that I would love them forever and would never regret them. I didn't think about my future and how I might change my view on my tattoos as I matured," Louise Smith said.

According to Sue Salmon of the Wollongong Tattoo Removal Service in New South Wales, the majority of their increasing numbers of clients are young women between 25 and 40.

"Their reasons vary. Anything from wanting to start a career in the army and relationships they've ended, to 'I'm not that person anymore'. Probably about 5 per cent are getting them removed to replace with a new one," Ms Salmon said.

Here's how tattoo removal works. The laser shatters the ink of the tattoo and the body's lymphatic system gradually removes it from the body. Apparently there is also an option to simply fade a tattoo if the person would prefer it.

What really irks me is that around the turn of the Millennium, some Kali rep got through a bill to have the taxpayers pickup the tab for tat removal as part of some prison rehab program for gangs members claiming to want to go straight.

One of my friends is an ER doc. He keeps joking about opening a Botox and laser tattoo removal clinic. All cash business.

“I want to be unique,” said this tattooed young lady, explaining the reasons for getting the tramp stamps, “like everybody else!”

Reminds me of the Archie Bunker episode where he dyed his hair then regretted changing the body that God had given him. He had a dream he was taking Munson’s cab to Heaven and parts were falling off. He said God was sore as hell at him.

If you want body art why not use the type that is temporary?

Henna tattoos are gone in four weeks and there are others that just last a few days. If you like them just apply a new one.

“Think before you ink”

Came back from deployment & the CO’s young wife decided she’d welcome him with dolphins tatted on the small of her back done at the PX tattoo parlor which meant most of our unit headed from the PX/commissary saw her face down getting needled. Cringeworthy.

In the halcyon days of my misspent youth, tattoo’s helped cull the pool of likely candidates to the sure thing.

Now, they are a statement of conformity.

When queried as to why I don’t have a tattoo, I would respond that I have never hated myself enough to do something like that to it.

FWIW, some gang initiations have occultic origins. The tattoo became part of the initiation as it involved a blood letting.

Doesn’t mean everybody who gets one is Satanic, and even those who are occultic, don’t recognize how they might be played by those already in the gang running the initiation.

Something to simply be cognizant about....

I see so many otherwise beautiful young girls skived up with these horrid tattoos nowadays. Really sad.

I could see a small one or two hidden somewhere but you see these girls with “shirt sleeve art” on both arms or across their chests. It’s so trashy looking.

Don’t get me started on the piercings........

I personally do not like tattoos. I don’t have any,nor does my husband. I was disappointed when my son got a couple semi-small tattoos but he is an adult and can do as he pleases.

I also don’t care for piercing, except for women’s ears.

I have actually successfully discouraged two people from getting tattoos, by suggesting a 6 month waiting period.

Their initial reaction is usually negative - but I just press them as to why the immediate need? Why can’t it wait a little while? If they agree, they eventually become very lukewarm on that tattoo that they just ‘had to have’ a few months earlier, and don’t feel the ‘need’ to get it.

I don’t have one. The irony is by not having one is that these days I am more original than many people.

My Dad had one. A retired Army Infantry CSM, he had the Army seal tattooed on his chest. Later in life he regretted having it done.
