Across North Carolina, thousands of people have been shocked in recent weeks to find out their health insurance plans will be canceled at the end of the year and premiums for comparable coverage could increase sharply.
One of them is George Schwab of Charlotte, who pays $228 a month for his familys $10,000 deductible plan from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
In a Sept. 23 letter, Blue Cross notified him that his current plan doesnt meet benefit requirements outlined in the Affordable Care Act and suggested a comparable plan for $1,208 a month $980 more than he now pays.
Im 62 and retired, Schwab said. This creates a tremendous financial burden for our family.
The President told the American people numerous times that If you like your coverage, you can keep it, Schwab said. How can we keep it if it has been eliminated? How can we keep it if the premium has been increased 430 percent in one year?
Schwab and others who purchase insurance individually, and not through employer-sponsored group plans, are finding that the Affordable Care Act may be unaffordable for their families.
The new law, which rolled out to consumers this week with the opening of the online insurance marketplace, requires most Americans to buy insurance or pay a fine. It also sets minimum standards for health benefits and prohibits insurers from excluding or charging higher premiums for people who have pre-existing medical conditions.
Theres good and bad in the law, said Chris Blount, a Blue Cross agent wth Piedmont Benefits Group in Charlotte. I think its bad that we cant have as many choices as weve had before. But its not like youre having to pay more and getting less. Youre having to pay more, and youre getting more.

As are all the liberal states.
However, the fact is that the majority of the votes go progressive time and time again...you cannot hide the fact that they are leftist states in general.
And MA in general WANTED socialized medicine.
The first clue is he said “the president” instead of “Obama”. This tells me he’s still in love with the won.
And isn’t it strange that the media is just now reporting on the people who got bad news letters in September.
That's the equivalent of blaming the victim of a mugging. Blame the GOP-E for their self-serving primary structure that gives us RINOs cycle after cycle.
Premiums will be double for smokers. WOW! We all better sell our stock in KOOL Cigarettes.
A friend of mine told me that her insurance premiums will triple in price come January 2014 and that her coverage will be worse.
Sandy Fluke-Puke certainly does; she’s singlehandedly keeping the birth control pill industry afloat. She eats ‘em by the handful, like M&Ms. LOL.
Hold fast House Republicans. Word is getting out.
If anyone thinks that Obama is some kind of strategic mastermind, consider the fact that Obama chose the Obamacare rollout to fight the defunding battle.
> When you take a thousand dollars from each family
times 100 million families, you have removed 300 billion dollars of
discretionary spending from the economy.
The economy will collapse.
Obamacare is economic suicide.
0bie didn’t think this through did her? Or did he?
The man is either as inept as they come, tremendously evil, or all of the above and its intentional to collapse our economy or hostile takeover or put us ino a position where the government will come to our rescue and provde a trojan horse tat will give them complete control of the citizenry.
Romney sucked and its great that he finally is put out to pasture
The only thing that would be worse than the situation we are in would be seeing that liar and con man in the WH fine tuning the ACA.

Disagree.
I didn't like Romney much but Obama is far worse.
Yeah....Harry Reid would have allowed for a vote in the senate to repeal it.
How about we blame those republicans who keep putting up RINO's with no spine? Or are you one of them....
C’mon. This 62 year old and his family now have mandated birth control and pregnancy coverage.
Obamacare is the cable television of health care. You have to pay for 900 things you don’t want and won’t use just to get the 20 to 50 things you do want.
As a guy, I'm really looking forward to my first exam by the OB/GYN. Should be interesting.
Just hope the doc's a female...
Not EVERYONE in MA is an idiot liberal. About 1/3 of the voters would consider themselves NOT liberal; some conservatives, some moderates.
But it's considered one of the most far-left states for a reason...the majority of voters vote left-wing.
“Youre having to pay more, and youre getting more.
Yeah that’s great. Unless a. you don’t want “more” and b. you can’t afford “more”.
I don’t know ANYBODY who has an extra $1000 per month just lying around.
Sex reassignment surgery, same-sex fertility coverage.
Good point. The problem is that you simply can't afford that "more." For instance, I'd love to own a Bugati Veyron. According to "Top Gear," it may be the best automobile ever built. If I were to buy it, I'd be getting something really great. The only problem is that I simply can't afford all the nifty stuff that goes into the car.
That's something that the leftists in the regime simply can't understand. Unlike government, people have to live within their budgets.
