Time to prescribe single-payer health insurance
Oregon Live ^ | October 13, 2013 | Amy Goodman

"We apologize for the inconvenience. The Marketplace is currently undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance and will be back up Monday 10/7/3013." You read it right, 3013. That was the message on the homepage of the New York state health insurance exchange website this past weekend.

Yes, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), popularly known as Obamacare, is going through difficult birth pains, as the marketplace websites went live only to crash. The government is not giving out numbers, but informed observers speculate that very few people have succeeded in signing up for any of the plans so far.

--snip--

So, while partisan bickering (between members of Congress who have among the best health and benefits packages in the U.S.) has shut down the government, the populace of the United States is still straitjacketed into a system of expensive, for-profit health insurance. We pay twice as much per capita as other industrialized countries, and have poorer health and lower life expectancy.

The economic logic of single-payer is inescapable. Whether Obamacare is a pathway to get there is uncertain. As Dr. Woolhandler summed up, "It's only a road to single-payer if we fight for single-payer."

Wikipedia says we had 50% nationalized “single payer” health care and Canada has 70% I believe. With Obamacare subsidies thrown in, I wonder if we’ll be as socialized as Canada after that.

Oh, and don’t forget; that masectomy you need? You have to wait NINE MONTHS for it. Ooops! The cancer spread to far! Too late! And the State doesn’t pay for expensive experimental treatments!

Good bye!

No, the O admin is a failure with healthcare as it is. I don’t think they get rewarded for failure.

Amy, hon, you’re jumping the gun just a wee bit on the “Obamacare has failed, therefore single-payer will be necessary to fix it” bandwagon. I guess you didn’t get the memo from your Obammunist masters to wait until AFTER the 2014 elections to advocate for socialized medical care.

An interesting road to single payer. If we did suddenly declare single payer we would still be stuck with some kind of registration system. This 700 million dollar registration system seems to be a failure. We couldn't base it on the IRS records because not everybody files tax returns.

The next time a liberal brings up single payer in your presence, make them really mad by suggesting the use of a voter ID for the health benefits card.

I love liberal logic: “The government screwed up limited control of health insurance, so they’re the natural choice to control it all.”

let’s not make this mistake again

NEVER refer to “single payer” alone

ALWAYS refer to it as “single payer government control” healthcare. It’s like Obamacare, only worse”

We let the libtards define the terminology over and over and over

You basically described insurance companies.

Just replace “gov’t clerk” with “insurance agent in India” and you are accurate

yeah well, you can always fire your insurance company and shop for a better one

but that’s not so easy to do with your GOVERNMENT

Eh, not really.

What if it is through your employer, and as most employers mandate, you must get insurance through them?

Quit your job for another insurance company? Please.

Insurance is crap in this country, as is the idea of gov’t run insurance. But what you described was the current insurance reality for Americans
