If this was to stop a default debt, that is utterly bullshit,

The only way the US could default on its debt is if Obama simply decides not to pay the interest on the outstanding loans.

“Each month the government collects $250 billion in taxes, and if the Congress decided not to raise the debt ceiling, Secretary Lew would have adequate resources to pay the $23 billion in interest to the public.”

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2013/10/16/obamas-victory-on-debt-ceiling-comes-at-terrible-price/?intcmp=trending

Why we would surrender now on that ground is beyond me, frankly with Obama’s Autocratic style of rule that could happen anyway. Not that defaulting on the debt and bring down the US credit rating would be a bad thing.

In fact I would say that would be the best thing that could happen to a democracy. Public debt is after all the great tool of financial unaccountably in politics.

The easier it is for politicians to take loans against future earnings to buy their votes the less likely they are to be held accountable for the cost of their actions.

We should by all rights want to abolish the U.S. Credit rating.

100 republicans in House should threaten to form a new party and give control of the House to the Dems if the Debt Ceiling is not REDUCED BY 1 PERCENT IN FEB 2014.

Does anyone know if Turtle McConnell stuck into the bill the effect of letting the WH Clown raise the debt ceiling anytime he wants and then Congress has the ability to STOP it but clown can veto that?

Thank you Tim Walberg.

Boehner needs a credible primary opponent.

According to the GOPe, it’s never the “right” time to fight for anything.

The debt limit can only currently be increased if Congress affirmatively votes to raise it and the president signs it into law. During Congress’ last debt limit debate in 2011, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R - KY) wanted to invert this process by making it automatic, unless Congress voted against it and the president did not veto it. Theoretically, Congress could override a veto, but given the current makeup of both chambers that would be nearly impossible.

BE CAREFULLLLLLLLLL

Interesting, Lynn Jenkins (R) Kansas voted YES, with the "leadership!'

I knew and said as much (check my past messages) when I found out Boehner selected her as one of the House GOP to get in on the "negotiation!"

She was a lib/mod in KS before running for the House and obviously she still is.

She definitely WILL be primaries and I'm betting will lose her job in DC, though, she'll probably get another on there to stay on, as so many of them do, as they just can't bear going back home to meatloaf and Friday night steak on the grill.

Of course for Lynn, her first "item of business" upon getting elected and moving to DC, was to divorce her husband and left the kiddies at home with him!

Not exactly a clean CR, is it Mitch? McConnell got his pork put in for his vote.

It also includes an increase in authorization for spending on construction on the lower Ohio River in Illinois and Kentucky. The bill increases it to $2.918 billion.

The Senate Conservatives Fund quickly called that language the “Kentucky Kickback,” and said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) secured that as the price of his support for the bill. Taxpayers for Common Sense says the bill would increase total authorized spending by $1.2 billion.

72 republicans have pretty well outed themselves.

Anyone know how Boehner voted? You’d think he voted “for” the amendments, but these guys are so craven.

We also see 122 republicans voting against the Senate version, but that really means nothing. Many of those are not conservative but live in conservative districts and the democrat vote gave them cover to cast a political vote acceptable to their district.

So, we now know that any speaker of the House would not have had the ultimate support of this crew of republicans if they’d wanted a showdown with the president.

A speaker with his majority caucus behind him can easily defy a president on this kind of thing.
