What I saw at the doomsday prepper convention
CNN Money ^ | 11/11/13 | David Z. Morris

More and more Americans are spending money to get ready for an uncertain future -- gathering food, water, tools, and skills to help them weather anything from a hurricane to a pandemic. Contrary to images of deluded or gun-obsessed "lone wolves," many preppers are average consumers reacting to concrete worries, and their way of thinking is spreading, fueling an emerging lifestyle trend. That lifestyle is generating demand for a broad spectrum of products offering survival -- or even comfort -- when large-scale systems go down.

“Now if you could only explain why there are more than a few ‘Conservatives’ (even here on FR) that have a detest preppers with the same hatred and vitriol as the the most Government loving red diaper doper baby you would have answered the $64,000.00 question. “

Strong feelings of inadequacy and ego is my guess. They refuse to admit that tomorrow won’t be the same as today and our prepping means we think they are wrong. They can’t abide by someone telling them they are wrong.

Thats my theory anyway.

I don’t know how many of you have had the topic come up with a liberal, but they have a seething hatred for preppers.

So I have been given to notice.

There are a couple of reasons that I gathered. First, every prep that you have or make is a vote of no-confidence in their god, the government.

It is an insult, as well, to their own self-assurance of survival without responsibility for the same. Consequently it rattles the existential cage, and no one likes that.

Second, they seem to have a sort of “eschatology” about crashing the economy, though they won’t admit that is what is happening.

Stalin, eggs, break.

It seems that everyone “being in the same boat” is a higher virtue for them, and prepping keeps you from being in that boat with them, and it infuriates them.

What do you expect from collectivists? One at least admires them for their consistency.

All in all an OK article. You notice of course that the author couldn’t help but get in several digs. But some good news as what is termed “prepping” becomes more mainstream. You know if we ever get to the point where 25% of the population is of that mindset, the chances of a worst case scenario coming to fruition are markedly reduced.

The liberals I have met are usually selfish, jealous, insecure, self-hating people who have been indoctrinated to believe in the “collective” and really despise those who are self-sufficient, more talented than they are, and who can do things that they cannot such as repair their own auto, weld, plumb, make home repairs, etc.

In the words of Michael Savage, liberalism is a mental disorder.

I say keep your mouth shut about what steps you are taking (or have taken) to prepare for the [fill in the blank] collapse. Tell no one what you have because when things are bad, civilization will turn into Lord of the Flies.

My neighbor has rebuilt a couple of 20 yr old mopeds. He think’s he and his wife are going to ride them out of town to safety.

I just nod, smile and say I need to do something.

It will also be a problem when the SHTF by some who don't even bother to have a political agenda. I am remembering the surprising accounts of 'generator envy' reported after hurricane Sandy. It opened my eyes to the mindset we may have to deal with someday.

Planning is just one of those things i don’t discuss with those of a statist mindset. Why bother? If they wish to act in such a manner that they’re likely to take themselves out of the gene pool then so be it. I wouldn’t wish to offend their cherished darwinian ideals.

Kartographer I realize that you may have a more religious take on it. Are we compelled to evangelize our less enlightened neighbors into planning?

Why the liberals hate preppers? because they feel superior to these back woods hillbillies and thier a##es will be the first to go or be preyed upon because they mostly live in an apartment in the inner cities. They all suffer from the acceptance of truth no matter what form it takes including telling the truth!

Seven miles away. It was and is magnificent. The pictures never do it justice. It’s a visual and emotional experience every patriot should behold.

The orange traffic cones during the “sequester” didn’t slow anyone down. Most of them suffered minor damage.

Some idiot removed the cat and replaced it with Jefferson.....turned out to be a wise move.

Yeah, that lady was a regular Eichman. Her column was shredded by furious readers. She said basically, that anyone who had “prepped” was a hoarder who hoped bad things would happen to others.

This woman was an “expert” in civil preparedness.

First rule of prepping is not to talk about prepping.

Guess those who want to be on TV did not get the memo.
