Inspiring post, Lancer. Despite the fact I was a (mostly suffering) Mets fan, I had utmost respect for the way Rose played the game & I wanted to emulate him in little league when I was a kid. It’s a shame he won’t make the Hall, as he was probably the greatest hitter ever. :-/

Rose was many things, but 'greatest hitter ever' wasn't one of them. A great hitter, no doubt, but scores of players both hit for better average and better power than Rose did. Rose had the longevity factor, which has benefits, for sure, but it doesn't mean that anyone on earth would rather have Pete Rose at the plate instead of Ted Williams. Or Babe Ruth. And so on.

Cy Young may have his the most wins ever; but if it's the seventh game of the World Series I want Koufax on the mound, even if he has 346 less wins than Young.

I was acquaintances with a former MLB player (who played in the 50’s) and once asked him what he thought was worse - gambling or drugging. He didn’t hesitate for a second and said “Gambling!”

If anything, they’ll let Rose in after he dies.

What a trade. WOW!!!

I bet Fielder’s horrible play in the ALCS made DET’s mind up. Good for them!!! The freed up money allows them to resign Max Scherzer. Ian Kinsler adds athleticism that DET needs. GREAT, GREAT move for DET. They should be (with a healthy Cabrera) the favorite in the AL for 2014.

At this point, A-Roid has pretty much overtaken Barry Bonds for biggest as*hole ever in MLB. Calling him a “tool” or “D-bag” are insults to those useful everyday items.

I hate to see fielder go but a DHer like Fielder is the kind of guy who provides long balls but doesn’t advance runners much otherwise.

I’d rather see a batter hit a bloop single to the outfield 3 of 5 at bats than 1 home run and 4 strike outs.

Fielder should do well in the Ballpark in Arlington, they really needed power from first base. And as I indicated, they had to decide what to do with Profar, either make him an everyday player, or trade him. Trading Kinsler solved that. So it’s a trade that makes both teams better. Double good for me, since the Tigers are my boyhood team, and the Rangers are my “home team.”

I agree. Brilliant move for DET all the way around. Look who they are replacing Fielder with - Cabrera.

I was there when Pete Rose played his first major league game. I was one of his biggest fans and was thrilled when he broke Ty Cobb's record.

But Pete broke a rule that, as a manager, he was charged with enforcing. A rule that is vitally important to the game I love.

I can forgive him. But I can't support him for the Hall of Fame.

When I was coaching HS baseball, one of the coaches was really high on his “mission” to help restore Rose’s status. I thought it was a terrible example for the kids. At least it was clear to them that there are to sides to this issue.

He bet on games, there is a rule that you can’t bet on games. He bet on his own games, games in which he controlled the outcome and when he didn’t bet on his games, it was a defacto bet against his own team. He did this to himself.

Amen. I always thought Pete and the Commissioner knew whatever happened was even worse than what was revealed such as actual bets against his own team for Pete to have essentially accepted the lifetime ban. But, put as you did, maybe it was all revealed and some are just too blind to see it as it was.
