A massive cargo plane bound for McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kan., from New York City landed at the wrong airport late Wednesday and is now temporarily stuck there.
The Boeing 747 LCF Dreamlifter took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 7:26 p.m. and was cleared to land at McConnell, but instead landed at the much smaller Jabara Airport about 10 miles north.
It's entirely unclear whether the Atlas Air flight landed at Jabara on purpose or by mistake. But audio captured by LiveATC.net suggests the Dreamlifter pilots informed McConnell's tower controller after the plane touched down, and did not realize where they were...

Didn’t think you’re supposed to use your hands....
Found this when trying to find a partially remembered commercial jet landing at a military airfield.

In Europe, you have to not only worry about what airport, but what country...
I guess Captain Sum Ting Wong didn’t stay unemployed for very long.
Back in the 1950’s, there was a small, private airport a few miles off the end of the major airport in town. An airliner landed there (I think it was a DC-6) instead of the airport he was supposed to be at. It was also very short and they were saying at the time that it couldn’t take off.
They stripped as much out of the plane as possible, drained all but about 15 minutes of fuel from it, and brought in some hotshot pilots. It took off successfully and flew to the airport it was supposed to have landed at. Then they started putting the airplane back together again.
I have heard of this happening several times since. I don’t know what happens to the pilots, but I imagine they end up looking for a new job.
Ruh Roh.
Was the pilot seeking asylum?
“We have no tower sir”

Buck Murdoch would know what to do.
OK I understand this thing is used to move 787 parts around the country, hence its size. But why was it flying from New York to Wichita? What’s made in New York?
Oh, gee. No, I hadn’t see it. But it makes my day—thanks for posting it. (I’m still laughing.)
It happens once in a while in Tucson, the main runway at the airport is as almost the same angle as the one at the AFB, and the AFB is about 90 seconds passenger jet flight further down that direction from the airport. Always kind of funny when it happens since it’s technically a security breach.
And the worst Salsa.
"Says here this stuff comes from New York City."
"NEW YORK CITY?!?!!"
"Get a Rope!"
Which is a really good album, BTW.
Thanks. Wonder what the airport designator is for those two and I’d love to see the approach plates for each one.
It was really weird that after all of James Jabara’s death defying career that he would die in a car wreck with his teenage daughter driving.
Just chop the wings off and turn it into a diner.
JATO?
Well, that’s a good thing.
