Is a Roth any safer than a 401K? Not sure, just wondering.

No, not really. If it is invested in the market, it will succeed or fail according to the market. And that does not even begin to cover the “bail in” confiscation of assets by the government like happened in Greece.

“Silver, dry store food, power generator, fuel, seeds, ammo, clothes, medicine and a surgical kit, water containers and purificaton, more food, ...”

You list “seeds”. I can tell you for sure if you don't know how to plant seeds to get them to grow before a collapse happens and you need that food, you won't get food from those seeds. I started learning how to grow last March and it took months to learn how to grow successfully. You need other supplies to go with those seeds to get them to grow food.

It is a science to learn. I changed to container growing as that is what allowed me to actually grow food. Based on location, one needs to find out what is the best medium in that location to grow food - in the dirt or in containers and what dirt needs to grow food and what growing medium needs to be in containers to grow food. You have to learn it, then do it, make mistakes and do it differently the next time so it works.

Growing food is a complicated science. Anyone interested in growing food should click into our gardening thread which is a new one every Friday and we post on that thread for a week until the next thread is posted the next Friday.

This week's gardening thread is below. greeneyes is the “boss” of the thread so if you want to get notice of the thread every week, post to her on the thread to add you to the list:

You can get the prospectus, and see what stocks each fund is invested in. Pick the funds that have companies that you belive can survive the next down turn best.

Doing some brain storming to come up with ideas (may or may not be good ideas):

Alternatively, you can, at some companies take out a loan on the 401k. You’ll pay interest on it to yourself. Depending on the size of the portfolio you could use the cash to pay off debt, invest, or hoard till after the fall.

If you hoard it, you can pay off the loan after the crash when things are looking up, and stocks are priced at lower dollar amounts.

Thanks, Marcella. I’ll check out that thread. I’ve been thinking that container gardening may be the way, for me. Maybe I’ll graduate to larger plots as my expertise expands.

No. 401(k) is not taxed when it comes out of your pay check, but is taxed when you draw on it.

Roth is post-tax, and is tax-free when you draw on it.

Both can have bonds, mutual funds or direct stock investments.

But nothing is written in stone and the Feds can change their mind about rules regarding 401(k) or Roth IRAs at any time. Ask retirees in Argentina when the Feds locked all their accounts and cleaned them out. And both are obviously subject to major market changes.

Very true, I’ve been gardening for a few years and some years I have good yields and others, not so much. But those are mostly garden veggies and not staples like wheat, barley, potatoes or other grains.

You also listed having a generator. Males always post have a generator. :o) You will run out of fuel plus generators make noise so people know you have “stuff”.

I write prepper articles on Survival Podcast and I recommend a strong enough solar panel and good charger to recharge good rechargeable batteries that can be recharged 1,500 times. The solar panel is going to be there and working when there is no fuel for a generator. If you want to start with a generator which I don't recommend, go ahead and use it but also have the solar panel/charger and many rechargeable batteries to take over when fuel is gone.

That was an interesting read. Thanks for the link.

I noticed the weasel words though. The guy saying don't be afraid of the work Impeachment, hedged by saying, “If” you believe that is what is happening, the response should be Impeachment.

I didn't see where the liberal guy actually agreed that Obama was doing unconstitutional things, but I could have missed it.

“Thanks for the link, Marcella. That was very considerate of you.”

Well, it was Old Sarge asking and I have to help the old fellow keep up. Actually, he works for a living, and I am at home so I have time to keep up with happenings. Old Sarge and I are FR buddies.

Read it again. The liberal professor said the constitution was written to prevent what Obama is doing and the only way to stop him is Impeachment. It was a Republican on the panel who said he wasn’t going to say the “I” word and then the liberal professor used the word and explained why.

That’s right Marcella. There’s always got to be an additional plan. Lots of folks here have generators, so I don’t think we would be the only ones making noise.

Remember this caveat: 1 is none, 2 is 1, and 3 is 2, I can’t remember who said it.

Anyway, I was always looking for redundancy. We have two generators, and fuel stored, but I have never liked storing all that gasoline. These are very practical for our usual garden variety electrical outages, since Hubby needed them for his business anyway.

It saved my Dad’s life more than once, since he was on oxygen 24/7/365, and couldn’t take the heat or cold. So a room air conditioner, oxygen concentrator, and a space heater run by the generator was just the ticket.

I am currently working on the solar and rechargeable batteries to add another fall back - one that I can use easier than the generator. Also, as you know, I am always looking for ways to do stuff in a self sufficient manner.

So I am also researching E-85 conversion kits for generators, and stills to make ethanol. I read that people during the great depression made some of their own fuel. Well, of course wouldn’t you know there’s a lot of laws against it, and exceptions are hard to obtain.

But it’s not illegal to research it and have the knowledge, just in case of changes down the road.

He’ll have a second term to show us what would have happened if Jimmy Carter got a second term.

I saw a solar generator at Costco this week. $1300. Don't have any other info on it, but will be asking hubby what he thinks.

The government is printing money to prevent deflation, what would normally happen with falling employment and incomes. Instead, the money it prints goes into the economy. Part of that money goes to buy federal bonds to prop up borrowing, and part of it goes into the stock market where the investors get a hold of something backed by assets (the company’s material and IP) and a revenue stream (dividends).

“Remember this caveat: 1 is none, 2 is 1, and 3 is 2, I can’t remember who said it.”

One backup for light is a year’s worth of jar candles. I figured out how many hours I would need light at night for a day, then figured that for a year. I did the same thing for canned heat - how many hours a day I would need heat for warming/cooking food, then figured it for a year.

I actually have at least three ways for everything and seven ways to cook. But, I’ve been doing this since 1998 so I’ve had time to develop and get these items.

I know you are always preparing also and your gardening is advanced and I’ve learned from you. Yes, I know you call it a “way of life” instead of preparing but you are prepared no matter what name we put on it.

I haven't seen you post in a while and wondered how you are. I thought maybe you were living in the mountain house and not plugged into internet. Have you moved to a different state yet?

The solar generator you are speaking of has to be a much bigger deal than my setup is. Mine is 20 watts and it will charge four AA batteries in about an hour I think it is. Mine charges all batteries, even 9 volt ones. A solar generator, however, must be really large and there must be a large battery to store that energy and connect to that battery to run larger equipment like a refrigerator or a room air conditioner. That would be great to have.
