Tea party threat again hangs over Republicans’ efforts to take Senate
Washington Post ^ | December 10, 2013 | Paul Kane

"...............Seven of the 12 Republicans running next year face tea party challengers.

“People are no longer deferential to existing officeholders,” said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the independent Rothenberg Political Report. “We’ve entered a whole new era. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

Some veterans suggested that the remedy for discouraging primary challenges was aggressive campaigns that throttle opponents, such as in Hatch’s 2012 primary contest against a tea party opponent, as opposed to weak campaigns like that of longtime incumbent Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), who lost in 2012.

“The only cure for political ambition is embalming fluid,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.).

Isakson is up for reelection in 2016 in Georgia, where tea party challengers popped up even before Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) announced he would not run for reelection next year. Big victories in 2014 over these challengers, Isakson said, “would certainly slow down the drive to do it.”

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who weathered a tea party challenge in 2010, less than two years after serving as the GOP presidential nominee, said he has given his colleagues facing primaries specific instructions: “Play offense. Go after your opponent. Your opponent’s going after you, you go after your opponent. The best defense is a good offense.”

To that end, (Sen. John) Cochran, 76, whose last tough campaign was more than three decades ago, is hosting a big $1,000-per-person fundraiser Wednesday at a Capitol Hill townhouse, declaring it an “ALL HANDS ON DECK” event on the invitation.....................

Be sure to read the whole piece — savor the paragraphs about how the GOP-e thought that by tapping Ted Cruz as vice chairman of the NRSC, he’d be their “liaison to outside conservative activists” but instead of “mollifying them” he encouraged them and helped them raise money.

Oh! The horrors!

Get out the embalming fluid, throttle them - attack!

The truth is that RINOs, not the Tea Party, are standing in the way.

Sigh... it always does my heart good to see the wonderful folks at The Washington Post giving advice to Republicans on how they are in serious danger because they listen to those nasty, grubby, Conservative folks.

I mean, you just have to KNOW The Washington Post has nothing but the best interests of the Republicans in mind. After all, they’ve been such staunch supporters for sooooo long!

All the GOP incumbents are Rat enablers. They bash their own base, before saying one bad word about their friends across the aisle.

Didn’t they have headlines like this back in 2010?

Oh the humanity! Can’t conservatives just be quiet and go back to their place at the back of the bus? This is what happens when people don’t learn the proper respect for their political betters (/s)

True enough, but the Washington Post didn’t put those words into the mouths of Republicans.

Too bad that didn't apply to his run against Obama

“The only cure for political ambition is embalming fluid,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.).

I am so effing mad now at this RINO poser. He's my Senator, and the only 'embalming' that is going to be happening now is his next primary run. He has steeled my resolve even further to ensure that his RINO ass never sees the floor of the Senate come his next election.

Damn him. He's nothing but Chambliss' little lap dog. Weasley little two-faced RINO, second-tier appeasing simp. We'll see what happens in November 2016 for you.

I don't care if we win the Senate with the likes of him and his ilk.

Same here w/ Mitch McConnell. I’ll vote Bevin in the primary, but should MM win primary I not vote for him in the general. I won’t vote for the the Rat either.

I am NEVER going to vote for a RINO I know to be dishonorable - EVER. I’ll vote against them in the primary and then sit out the general if need be, but never again. Holding my nose twice is enough.

Yours is the point.

What good is winning if we are merely putting Dem Lites in office and not Conservatives.

We may as well vote for a real Democrat as a fake one calling himself a Republican.

I watched Chris Carr, GA Senator Johnny Isakson’s outgoing chief of staff (he’s now in change of economic development for the state), do exactly that at a talk a couple months ago. He spent more time bashing Cruz over the shut down than he did bashing Democrats. Cruz was right, as the initial implementation nightmare of Obamacare has proven.

I read a great article by Sheriff Jim R. Schwiesow, Ret. written February 4, 2011 from "NewsWithViews.com" and here's part of it.
Read Compromise Is a Dirty Word for Club for Growth.

We will never unify under "Establishment Republicans" .
"Establishment Republicans" have more in common with the Democrats, than they do with Conservatives.
The weak candidates are "Establishment Republicans", weak on national security, amnesty for illegals, abortion, and government spending.
"Establishment Republicans" scream "COMPROMISE".
And people who study the Bible know that COMPROMISE almost always leads to destruction.
These "Establishment Republicans" are being weeded out, one by one, and slowly but surely, the TEA Party is taking over.

Take a good long look at where "Establishment Republicans" ALWAYS take us.

Funny; McCain didn’t try this when running in 2008.

Let me see if I have this straight.
By your lights as expressed in another thread, we should go after Republicans—RINOs—but it’s bad form to attack—hands off—uber Democrats Obama?
That doesn’t make any sense CW, unless you’re a Democrat.
