Calling her "a parent's worst nightmare," a judge sentenced former Hillsborough County schoolteacher Ethel Anderson to 38 years in prison Monday for performing oral sex and other lewd acts on a 12-year-old boy she tutored on weekends.
Circuit Judge Chet Tharpe's severe punishment of Anderson seemed designed to send a message in a county that has attracted disproportionate attention for sex scandals involving female educators. The most notorious of them, Debra Lafave, managed to avoid incarceration completely after pleading guilty to sex with a 14-year-old boy.
"There are those that believe that nothing's wrong if the defendant is a woman and the victim is a male," Tharpe said Monday. "This court does not recognize gender. If it's proven, as an adult, that you had sex with a child, you can expect to go to prison."

Does this dress make me look guilty?
This be be overturned on appeal, too excessive.
The race baiters will be pointing out how pretty young white teachers get off with probation...yadda yadda..
Had the Judge given her 10 years it might hold up, 38? No way!
Grope Zero?
It will be very difficult for this 12 year old to interact normally with women as an adult.
He will not seem to be "hurt" or "damaged" by this until he is 50 years old, and alone, and has never had a successful or meaningful relationship.
As one who believes in redemption, I think that these teachers should be given the opportunity for a second chance while in prison...let them teach GED classes, and maybe they can earn some time off their sentences based upon how many they successfully get to complete the program.
Her sentence seems harsh, but then I remember the victim was only a 12 year old child. She’s a predator. Throw away the key.
Love the 1st Amendment, but President Washington acknowledged that only a moral and religious citizenry were able to self-govern.
It becomes more acceptable as just a historic account, which is very difficult for obvious reasons. I agree that the expression is pretty horrific, but then again, so is the entire subject.
Such baselines, for other crimes, are common, such in the FBIs annual crime report. We know that there are going to be murders, and rapes, and arson in the upcoming year. So, too, molestation by teachers, as a subset of all molestations.
So what does a “molestation baseline” mean? It means that right now there are some teachers molesting students, and nobody but the teacher and the students know. And it means that some of that molestation will be unmasked. It also means that some teachers who will eventually molest, have not done so, but are still teaching because there is not yet an effective screen to prevent them from doing so.
Still waiting to hear she’s decapitated in a car accident...seems to be de rigeur for blonde Satanists.
LOL. Kind of a non sequitur...If you want yet another reason to be married to the woman who is bearing your child, I know someone who got his casual girlfriend pregnant. She insisted on naming the baby "Edgar." Might be OK for a person of color, but not if you're white, blue collar, middle America. When he suggested they name him something that not get him beat up on the playground, she was highly offended. And over his objections, she named that poor child Edgar.
I remember this very young, attractive teacher a few years ago having sex with a 12 year old boy who was one of her students. I felt so sorry for her husband who did a couple of TV interviews. How humiliating for the world to know that your wife had sex with a 12 y.o. boy. Still feel sorry for that guy.
She’s not guilty to me. I like a little meat on the bones. ;-)
Does the thought of it feel healthy and liberating to you?
You know what I mean.
A little ?
Hopefully, he will remain content just to masturbate to the memory of such a transcendent encounter, as someone else on this thread suggested.
I’ve heard about this sick crime in the news, and while I did not think she’d get 38 years, prison is where she belongs.
Are you looking for a big government research grant?
Just wondering.
Thank you for your excellent comment.
