Chet Tharpe is a HARD ASS JUDGE! He’s one of the most ruthless judges in Florida and has a reputation to back it up. He has a tendency to completely dress down the people in his court room, and he’s feared by criminals around the Bay area.
Keep an eye on Chet Tharpe. If he ever runs for office, you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be a Republican contender.

I’m as guilty of the “not guilty” thing as anybody. That said, I find the idea of the victim being 12 WAY out of the realm of being funny, at all. But 38 years? Just damn.
At least one Judge in this country still has his head screwed-on straight.
OK, I don’t condone this behavior from the teacher, but 38 years? Some murderers don’t get 38 year sentences. She will get her sentence overturned because it’s excessive.

In all fairness, some research needs to be done to discover some facts about what appears to be recent phenomena of teachers molesting their students.
1) Since such molestation is known to have existed even in ancient times, a baseline needs to be established of what is the “typical” amount of molestation that happens.
2) This will also help to establish if there is more happening now than used to happen in times where it was handled administratively rather than criminally.
3) The hard part will be the development of a psychological profile of a teacher who molests. While it is unlikely that a profile will be clear enough so that such potential teachers are not hired, if a given teacher is showing a greater than average possibility, then steps can be taken to mitigate the possibility. Such as a student interaction “surety” program, in which there are always two teachers present for student interaction outside of normal class time.

Yeah, 38 years does seem awfully long. I don’t know exactly how these legal maneuverings work, but I am betting she does not serve more than 2 years.
Damn, if my Little Elvis saw that, he’d not only shrivel up, he’d crawl right back into my body!
