Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has a huge lead over Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), his newly announced primary foe, according to a new survey conducted by GOP pollster Wilson Perkins Allen Research.
Cornyn leads Stockman by 50 percent to 6 percent, according to the poll. Other candidates pull a combined 5 percent; 39 percent remain undecided.
Stockman was a surprise entrant in the race earlier this week and needs to hold Cornyn to less than 50 percent of the vote to force a runoff in the early March primary. He has little funding for his campaign and as the poll shows isn't well-known across the state. Cornyn has $7 million in the bank and looks like he'll be in strong shape. Pollster Chris Perkins, who isn't working for either candidate, added the poll to a corporate survey he was conducting in the state. His clients include Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), who's running for governor.
"With less than three months until the Republican Primary for United States Senate, John Cornyn is in a very strong position," he says in a poll memo, obtained by The Hill.
The live-called poll of 762 likely Republican primary voters was conducted from Dec. 10-12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

I support Stovall but I like having Stockman in the race - as long as he stays focussed on Cornyn. Stockman is a rhetorical bomb-thrower and will get some solid hits on Cornyn. Since this is a runoff anything that tears Cornyn down is to the good.

50% doesn’t seem like a great number for a sitting senator.
Wasn’t Dewhurst leading Cruz in the early polls?
They say they got irrefutable proof on Obama. Almost popcorn time.
A supporter of the Chinese Communist Party? Wow!!
Trade one scoundrel for another. Cornyn’s been there long enough to prove he’s just stealing oxygen. Time to turn the till.
And there will be a runoff.
LOL, Zullo, Arpaio and the Cold Case Posse
Wrong meme, Bill Clinton is a supporter of the Chinese Communist Party
Mary Landrieu and Kay Hagan have been panicking about their re-election prospects because their poll numbers are only 47% and 43%, respectively.
So John Cornyn, who’s polling only 50% among Republicans, should also be panicking.
BTW, no one seems to be considering the consequences of a possible Supreme Court ruling this year which would eliminate all restrictions on political campaign funding. A favorable ruling would allow Conservatives to contribute enough money to Conservative candidates to overcome the advantage moderate Republicans have who often receive large contributions from companies whose interests they represent in Congress.
However, with John Cornyn at only 50%, Steve Stockman would not need such help, especially if the hugely popular Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin agree to campaign for him.
“Wasnt Dewhurst leading Cruz in the early polls?”
Yes, see post #1 where I put the results of a poll from 2011. Dewhurst was the overwhelming favorite, Cruz was an unknown and undecided were high. Not a perfect parallel but pretty close (though Cornyn is a known incumbent, that may help him with some, hurt him with others).
But in any case, we now have Senator Cruz, not Senator Dewhurst!
Yep. It’s early right now.
Another Stockman basher that isn’t flying a Texas flag on his home page. Can’t your guy find ANYONE in Texas to shill for him here?
Oh, wait. I looked a little further down your posts. You bash Cruz, as well.
There used to be some anti-freeper web sites for establishment republicans like you. Have they all shut down now?
