A final effort by Senate Republicans to halt cuts to pensions of military retirees failed late Tuesday, after Democrats blocked an amendment to the controversial budget bill.

The two-year budget agreement, which cleared a key test vote earlier in the day, was expected to get a final vote no later than Wednesday.

Ahead of the final vote, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., tried unsuccessfully to use a parliamentary tactic to force a vote on the amendment, which he wrote to undo the cuts for military retirees.

A provision in the already House-passed bill would cut retirement benefits for military retirees by $6 billion over 10 years....

What a shame. Cutting vets benefits is akin to messing with mother nature.

Ass biting comes to mind.

Gee, maybe they shouldn’t have voted for the cuts in the first place.

It’s time for retired flag officers to get off the golf course and take leave from their cushy defense consulting jobs and stand up for the troops.

It's OK for them to cut money to disabled vets ... so long as they
use the dough for a good purpose ... like welfare payments to illegals!

Then perhaps twelve Republicans shouldn’t have voted for the cloture that allowed this latest Republican capitulation to reach the Senate floor. If the Republican caucus holds firm (yes, yes, I know ...) then there’s no vote.

I expect Democrats to betray our troops and retired veterans. I expect better from Republicans.

(Yes, yes, I know ...)

Why is it so easy to cut military benefits, but not social security? What’s the difference? One might think we would hear the same squealing, but the GOP just hasn’t figured out how to whine very well.

Thanks for the ping, JJ!

I just heard that @$$hat Schumer saying that civilian Federal employees had been cut and that military retirees now needed to be cut likewise.

I say Bravo Sierra! Civil servants are not expected to go into harm's way.

There are more people collecting Social Security than there are collecting military retirement!!! And the number is growing every day!! So it all comes down to numbers!!! AS IN VOTES!!!!

We have the house, although you cannot tell by results. Having everything does zero good if the current crop of “leaders” stays in place.
