Severe Antarctic weather was slowing an Australian icebreaker's bid to reach a Russian ship trapped in ice since Christmas eve with 74 people onboard, the Australian maritime rescue agency said on Monday.
The Aurora Australis was currently about 11 nautical miles from the stranded Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, said the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is co-ordinating the rescue.
"The area is currently experiencing snow showers, resulting in poor visibility. The Aurora Australis is travelling slowly due to the conditions to ensure the safety of all on board," AMSA said in a statement.
AMSA had earlier expected the Aurora Australis to arrive at the scene Sunday evening.

This is a Russian ship trapped, and it is full of global warming alarmists??? Are your sure about that???
From what you've seen of the surrounding pack ice and its deformations, would you be able to operate on it?
No...we would have to go nearby to a place where there is smooth enough terrain or ice-flow that has about 8000 feet to operate near the ship. Most any real operation would include helicoptering of the passengers to us or some big ski-equipped aircraft or ship-to-ship helo transfer. We already did an emergency airlift this year of 4 South Koreans who crashed their helo on the deck of their aircraft at Terra-Nova Bay (Italian Station in Antarctica called “Mario Zuchelli Station”)
However, we have airdrop capability to if it came down to it we could easily air drop any needs to them.

Gee didn’t dogma of St. Algore assure us that the polar caps are melting as the earth has a fever? PS the temperature outside is -7 with a -25 degree wind chill... Please send some of that global warming.

No to the hovercraft, but supplies of any kind are easy enough. If there was a skiway groomed out nearby on sea ice (8-12 feet thick or so) and or on the land mass nearby that does not have ice bumps (sastrugi) or broken ditch-like cracks (crevasse) then we can land and pick up folks (about 30-40) and get them out to McMurdo then back to Christchurch or something like that.
Al Gore, Obama , Pelosi and the democrat congressional politicians should go join these scientists on that ship. since they all believe in fake global warming then they know that global warming will break up that ice soon right? let them put their asses on the line for their hoax that they are using to enslave us and grow government

these scientists went there to document global warming lol. and this cruise was paid for by government grants. ironic if freezing growing ice will trap them there until they die isn’t it? lol

a lot of democrats including al gore predicted that the North pole would be ice free by this year 2013. i know that is the north pole but you all get the point. fact is ice is the thickest its ever been in Antarctica (south pole).

They probably got the report on the ice being over 2m thick, when most icebreakers won’t do much over a meter.
The Guardian site devoted entirely to this voyage which had been making multiple daily updates to its page hasn't made an entry for two days and the reader comments which are very critical keep being deleted. Last night there were some 300 reader comments, almost all pointing out the sheer stupidity, this morning there are 80.
Sounds expensive, make sure you bill them all directly, no government funds.
I think there are even some Guardian reporters on that ship

they already banned light-bulbs(phasing them out) , closing coal power plants etc because of this dangerous hoax
In other news , comment from Al gore was sought on this tragedy. but al gore was inside by the fireplace under a comforter counting his million$ ( it's cold in the USA, the polar ice cap in the north pole is growing by what 40%?, the ice is thickest its ever been in Antarctica etc.
