Chinese Navy exercise it's aircraft carrier battle group

Chinese Navy (PLAN) exercises it's Carrier Strike Group
with it's LPD and escorts, including two SSNs

During the last week of December, the Chinese Navy, the PLAN, conducted exercises with a large group of vessels in what some are calling the Chinese combined fleet.

It included their carrier, the Liaoning, CV-16, which is a modernized and refitted Russaain carrier and sister of the Russian, Kuznetsov. it included one of the Chinese large Landing Platform Docks (LPD) which is similar in size and function to the US Navy San Antonio Class LPDS. it included one of the Chinese Type 052C, Lanzhou class destroyers, which are similar in function to the US Navy Arleigh Burke class AEGIS destroyers.

It also included the two Type 051C destroyers, both of which are strong multi-function, anti-air destroyers, and two of their newer Tyep 054A guided missile frigates, which the Chinese have built 20 of in the last 4-5 years. These frigates are very strong multi-mission firgates, with low observation technology, a 32 cell VLS launcher for anti-air missiles, and decnt anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. The US Navy currently has no frigates with such strong capabilities.

Finally, it indluded two of the Chinese attach submarines. The pictures are indistinct, but it apears that at least one of these vessels (perhaps both) are the newerType 094 nuclear attack submarines, which are similar in size and function to the earlier US NAvy Los NAgeles attack submaries, though perhaps not as quiet ats those vessels. The US Navy has since built the three boat Sea Wolf Class, and is now building the thrid generation beyond the Los Angles class, the Virginia class of nuclear attack submarines of which ten have been built to date.

This represents ten vessels, and is a very strong strike group in the Western PAcific. Since CHina is intent on building several of these types of strike groups, perhaps as many as five by 2030, it is a developing force that cannot be ignored or underestimated.

Here are pictures from the exercises:

One cannot help but notice that the Chinese carrier has not aircraft onboard. This is because the Chinese have not completed the airwing for the carrier yet. Though they have built a strong naval air training facility on th Buhai Sea, and though they have started traing pilots there and on the carrier, to date they have only embarked up to three of their J-15 Strike fighters on the carrier. That aircraft is a modernised version fo the Russian SU-33 Flanker fighter. The Chinese recently started serial production of these aircraft so we can expect over the next -2 years for them to fully develop their airwing around those aircraft, and around Ka-28 ASW helicopters, Z-8 ASW and SAR helicopters, and Ka-31 AEW helilciopters, all of which are a [part of the Chinese inventory.

Despite not having the aircraft onboard yet, the Chinese are accomplishing three very important gaols with the documentation of these exercises to the world.

  1. To show other nations, particularly in the region, that they are building a significant capability. That they are well advanced in the development of that capability.
  2. To show their own people what they are doing, and how these assets are coming together. There is, and will be a LOT of national pride regarding such a development...and very understandably so.
  3. To offset the messages other nations are also sending with their own buildups, and perhaps to pre-empt those messages, particularly from India, Japan, and Australia...and perhaps Korea. But mainly from India who will be conducting exercises this with week and next in the Gulf of Oman with both of their carriers, the new Virkamaditya and the Viraat.

The fact is, outside of the United States, the Indians are now the only other country on earth who can conduct exercises with two of their own fixed wing carriers, and you can bet that the Indians will be putting out pictures of those exercises to send that message to the world.

China is pre-empting the message the Indians will definitely send (and others from other nations) with this one.

And it is a message that cannot be ignored.

Back in 2002-2003, people scoffed at the notion of the Chinese doing something like this...well, now they are.

As I have stated for the last 14 years, this is something that we need to take seriously and stop feeding.

Is their deck-crew color code the same as ours?

It’s time for Japan to abolish the article 9 of their constitution, time to re-arm, make nuke-tipped balistic missiles, build at least 15 JDS Izumo’s and real Ford-class aircraft carriers, make their own F-35, F-35B and F-35C variants, arm their submarines with nukes, do something to scare the rising dragon!

Good afternoon my FRiend, I hope you are doing well.

Yes, the Chicoms want a place at the table, and if they can't get it, they will invade Formosa. [Yes, I know].

Odd, how the boys in Peking are scaring the Japanese. Why would anyone want to resurrect the Bushido/kamikaze Japan of the 1930s...with nukes? [Imho, a deliverable nuke within a month]

We do live in interesting times...

I think they are replicating US carried deck operations as close as they can. So I think they are very similar in terms of their codes.

Now, right now they are STOBAR operations, but they plan to get to CATOBAR, and they plan to ultimately have the cats and then nuclear propulsion.

People underestimate them and scoff at them at our own peril. They are serious about a long term commitment to trying to level the playing field and we need to use our capabilities to:

1) Stay ahead.

2) Stop feeding their system with the capital that allows them to do this.

Right now on a scale of one to ten. Our own government 10, Muslims 9, Chinese three to three and a half. Just my opinion based on the US gravy train. Yea we owe them debt, but we also are the cash cow which is probably what Jeff believes needs to be cut off. If true a great many US companies need to change their business model. Wonder how long it would take US manufacturers to tool up to replace the volume of goods we get from China?

Probably not as long as it would take us to tool up for defense needs once China decides it's ready for war.

Yes...the SU-33 was designed principally as an air-superiority fighter and carried mainly A2A loads off of the Russian carrier, but the Chinese are using them as true strike fighters and can carry A2A and A2G.

Their new manufacture J-15 uses lighter composites, better avionics, AESA radar, etc. and they can get into the air with a decent load. They are also doing buddy stores so they can refuel after take-off to further increase the load they can carry.

I think China's also sending a message to the west that should China desire to expand their territory in APAC (think China Sea, Taiwan, etc..) they'll go ahead and do it, United States be damn'ed.

Considering they hold several TRILLION dollars of U.S. debt and own quite a bit of real estate in the U.S. would we really try and stop them? Not if they can (and they can!) crash our currency and plunge the U.S. into a deep depression from which it would take decades to recover.

The Chinese are smart that way. Sun Tsu's "Art of War" is a very interesting read and highlights the Chinese's long-term view of the world as they want to shape it.......

I'm beginning to think that China was being disingenuous with us when they said that the Liaoning was going to be a casino. Call it a hunch.
