Judge, Citing Extreme Facts, Tosses Arrest of NYC Professor
New York Law Journal ^ | 1//21/14 | Joel Stashenko

Unnerved by a chaotic scene that involved a bolting dog, a sick husband and an aggressive police officer who ignored her pleas, it was "hardly surprising" that Suzanne LaFont tried to physically stop the officer from handcuffing her husband, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Steven Statsinger said....

For 30 to 60 seconds on April 11, 2013, the judge noted, LaFont tried to pull on the arm and shoulder of Officer Anthony Giambra to stop him from restraining her ill husband, Karl Peltomaa, outside their apartment on West 83rd Street....

According to the ruling and LaFont's papers, her husband had only been home from Roosevelt Hospital for one day after surgery for an aortic aneurysm when he began to feel very anxious on April 11, 2013. In two calls to 911, LaFont said her husband had just been in the hospital, was on a "lot of medication" and that he was "freaking out."

LaFont also explained that Peltomaa did not have a "psych history," just a "medical history."

When Giambra and other first responders arrived a short time later, LaFont's dog dashed out the door. After returning the dog to the apartment, LaFont said she found Giambra attempting to subdue her much smaller husband by pressing his chest against a hallway wall.

She said that despite her trying to tell the officer that Peltomaa had just had open-heart surgery, he threw her husband face down onto the floor. According to statements by the couple, Peltomaa was hospitalized for two days following the incident with a cut to his chin and a dislocated thumb....

"Rather than interfering with the responders' task, her providing them with accurate medical information about Peltomaa could have assisted them in managing the situation more effectively," the judge wrote.

I’m not convinced that everyone has one.

“Sheriff departments, police departments need to be eliminated and the policing duties turned over to the state police.”

Wrong! The only ones in your above comment responsible to ‘we the people’ are Sheriff’s. The bullies are generall in municipal police departments, and Arkansas is an example of what can go wrong if the State Police have state-wide police authority...abused by Clinton as Gov there.

In Ohio the State Highway Patrol has that as their only function. And rightly so. Only Sheriff’s have statewide policing authority. Best it stay that way, inspite of what Kasich wants.

“When a call finally comes in they swarm to the scene and act like apes. You see three and four cars out on an interstate, where they don’t belong anyway, for a speeder stop.”

Exactdly! I our town, where there is virtually no crime, a mid-evening traffic stop ( for say going 30 in a 25) draws every car that’s out. They are like flies around a toilet seat! And they are anxious for there to be some sort of a confrontation so that they can abuse a citizen just for fun!

They exist. They will either be used as intended, or else seared in Satan’s lying flames. Nothing escapes.

Sincere Christians can try to intercept consciences before the situation gets too bad. The general pertinent message is to counsel the acceptance and the exercise of God’s love.

“Mexico has a great system where the police work is done by the Federales... “

Yeah, a free car, and free bullets, and you just go out and “earn your living!”
Federales are the most corrupt policing “organization” in Mexico. Just look how the locals in Michoacan are telling them to stay away while they re-take control of their towns from the Knights Templar Drug Cartel.

“It seems that modern cop craft is based on the premise that everybody you meet is a crook/ threat.”

The correct answer is both! The all believe everyone with whom the come in contact to be a “crook.” They look forward to them being a “threat” as well because that’s when they can have some “fun.”

I’ve been talking about seared consciences.

This sounds like an example.

Consciences are given by God to direct people to where love is.

Well when the person allows himself to be beguiled by the hatred from Satan, they direct people to hate like Satan hates, instead. The bible calls it “searing as with a hot iron.”

The answer is and always was, pure gospel. The love of God poured out so as to overwhelm the hate of Satan.

“Or any case where the sheriff is beholden to any special interest group. Yep, that’s the downside. “

Or it can be a serious “up side” too. Just look at the number of sheriff’s in Colorado and Utah that are in support of the 2A. In Utah, only the a$$hole who is sheriff in Salt Lake County doesn’t sign on. That’s 27 out of 28 sheriffs. And in Colorado it’s about 75% of the county sheriffs there that are on board. Hell, here in California (58 counties) more than half of them are 2A supporters. I’ll take my chances with the sheriffs before the city cop or the jerks that patrol the highways.

Yes, but the only reason it doesn’t work there is because the wrong people are in charge...

That is an excellent point! I can't imagine a state police commissioner coming out strongly for the 2A. Because the commissioner has to answer to the PC politicians in the statehouse.

But sheriffs do not have that problem.

I think many atheists are not so much opposed to the idea of God as they are prone to thinking that God looks back at them in the mirror. While I am a fan of Rand I think she may have been in that camp.

She was lucky. Don’t call the cops in such a situation. That was a big mistake. Call the medical first responders, if necessary.

Call 211, not 911.

Well... people WILL worship something. It can be self. That in fact was the Serpent’s original drawing card in the Garden temptation. Step up and get yer very own morality system here! Make God jealous! (Well, He was.)

But all manner of people may tell you they are atheists when really it’s a situation of finding they have a great difficulty attempting to exercise faith in God. Some of them pray!

the law isn’t about crushing somneone to dust. conservative does not mean big brother boot on your face law enforcement. i don’t know why youthink that.

conservatives are not the ones who brought us zero tolerance security laws, or officer-safety-above-all-else-including-your-rights-and-your-life police tactics.

we get upset because libtards selectively enforce laws, use the law as a weapon to go after their enemies, ie IRS targeting, or politicize law - too many blacks being arrested, etc. say we have to follow the law, but they don’t. that’s what conservatives get angry about. the hypocrisy and double standards. further ignoring the lawand just doing what they want, but ot letting others do the same thing when they are in power.

Well there are such things as “godless conservatives.” If called out in the name of God for some of their extremes, they will attack both you and God vigorously.

It happens that in the American milieu, the “conservative” faction has kept God. That’s because the church is still something remembered warmheartedly, even if not always used wisely. Whereas we have gotten booing of God from the “liberal” faction.

Like I said the “godless conservative” exists and I had a bit of a knock down drag out with one last night here on FR (he got rebuked by a mod who was alerted by someone else). There is no logical reason the liberals aren’t the more godly side in some other hypothetical face-off. America is not the whole wide world and it is not the totality of history.

Police, instead of commanding respect, as in the older day, now demand respect.

In Ohio the State Patrol is comprised of radar technicians.

The state-wide speed limit is kept at 65 as more tickets can be written.

The "judge" is an idiot. She was trying to tell Officer Jackboot the guy he was beating up just had open-heart surgery. I'm not sure what more she could have done to get big, bad Officer Jackboot to stop beating him up.
