Target announces it will drop part-time employees from its healthcare plan

Target Corp. announced on Tuesday it would no longer offer healthcare coverage to its part-time employees.

In a blog post on the company’s website, Jodee Kozlak, the executive vice president of human resources, framed it as a positive development for part-time employees of the company.

“The Health Insurance Marketplaces provides new options for healthcare coverage that we believe our part-time members may prefer,” she wrote. “In fact, by offering them insurance, we could actually disqualify many of them from being eligible for newly available subsidies that could reduce their overall health insurance expense.”

Kozlak added that at present, fewer than 10 percent of part-time employees that are eligible have actually enrolled in the company’s healthcare plan.

“Our decision to discontinue this benefit comes after careful consideration of the impact to our stores’ part-time team members and to Target, the new options available for our part-time team, and the historically low number of team members who elected to enroll in the part-time plan,” Kozlak continued.

Unless you are a team leader or higher, Target keeps you at part-time, with hours dependent on how busy a store is.

That’s pretty much all of Target’s workforce.

IOW, why the heck should we support them when the cost can be spread over the taxpayers? I wonder how the deductibles compare?

Ask your favorite liberal what they think the goals of Obamacare are.

It sure isn’t making insurance affordable and available, and it sure isn’t insuring more people.

I love corporate spin. The funny thing about it is the only ones who believe corporate press releases is the management and the consultants who tell them how to word it. Let me interpret the statement:

“The Health Insurance Marketplaces provides (an excuse for Target not to provide) new options for healthcare coverage that we believe (meaning we did not ask or survey) our part-time members may prefer,” she wrote. “In fact, by offering them insurance, we could actually disqualify many of them from being eligible for newly available subsidies that could reduce their overall health insurance expense.” (In other words, why should we help our employees when the Federal Government will pay for it.. thanks Chamber of Commence.)

Kozlak added that at present, fewer than 10 percent of part-time employees that are eligible have actually enrolled in the company’s healthcare plan. (So what is the big deal)

“Our decision to discontinue this benefit comes after careful consideration of the impact to our stores’ (not really, careful review of the Income Statment) part-time team members and to Target (we really did not ask them) , the new options available for our part-time team (tax payers can now pay the bill) , and the historically low number of team members who elected to enroll in the part-time plan,” (screw the 10% who want health insurance)

Next step, drop full time employees for ostensibly the same reason.

Will Target now respond by raising their pay, since they now don’t have to cover healthcare for workers? Most team members at Target make around $9 an hour.

Wasn’t that one of the great “promises” of Obamacare as well?

Something tells me that just ain’t gonna happen.

Most of the part timers probably can’t afford the company insurance anyway.

They can. You don’t much beyond basic healthcare, within Target. However, 90% of the time that is all you really need is healthcare at a level that is slightly beyond what a person can do for themselves.
