Travelers at Cleveland Hopkins Airport brace for cuts by United Airlines (60%+ of flights to be cut)

CLEVELAND, Ohio – United Airlines confirmed Saturday that departures from Cleveland will be cut by about 60 percent due to unprofitable operations in the city.

Northeast Ohio Media Group spoke with several travelers to get their feelings on what the cutbacks will mean. Here’s what they had to say:

Omar Garcia of Cleveland uses United to fly to Puerto Rico. It’s what he’s flown since he came to America five years ago from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. It’s the same airline his mother, brothers, sisters and their families used to move to America.

He was at the airport Saturday to pick up another sister who was flying direct from the island.

“I fly United because it’s the cheapest flight I can find,” he said. < snip >

I got re routed on United this fall coming back from England. I think they have the oldest stewardess working. It was like flying with a bunch of crabby old aunts.

Which begs the question....

Why would anyone want to fly to Cleveland in fist place....?

No doubt the IAM (machinists and aerospace union) played a role in this. Unions are parasites that eventually suck the life out of the corporations.

Those new regulations have caused mainline airlines to hire regional pilots, while simultaneously significantly reducing the pool of new pilots from which regional carriers themselves can hire.

If I'm not mistaken this refers to the recently implemented regulation requiring regional pilots have at least 1500 flying hours of experience as opposed to 250, and is in response to the crashes in Buffalo and Lexington which were caused by pilot error? Why is this a bad thing?

Having been a passenger on UAL I cannot imagine why anyone would want to fly on that airline.

We liked Continental/United for their non-stop service to LAS/CLE with all seats sold on every flight (and hope that it remains) but that flight may be on the chopping block.

As for some of the remarks about Cleveland, they are justly deserved, but downtown Cleveland is making a remarkable turnaround plus the addition of the Casinos, (which helped). The near east side is a Detroit “wanna be” and soon heading that way!

“Cleveland was one fantastic city. Destroyed by mass migration from the south.”

That is the story of most northern cities, though I would say “Destroyed by mass migration from the south while jobs were leaving the cities”.

It seems to be that way on every airline. I can’t remember the last time I had a friendly and/or attractive stewardess. I’m a woman, so the attractiveness isn’t that important to me. It’s just that I notice that stereotype of young, pretty stewardesses is long gone. I would be happy with friendly instead of some crabby old hag barking orders for the whole flight. I call them the TSA in the sky!

I like the crews on Air France. Never had a bad flight. I like Brisish Air too but am always afraid of strikes by their unions

FWIW, Puerto Ricans aren’t illegal; they’re US citizens. Also, Puerto Ricans have a relatively large and successful community in Cleveland. They aren’t all Ariel Castro wannabees.

It's not that simple. Cleveland always had a large black populations, back to the days when escaped slaves got to Cleveland on the way to Canada, then couldn't get across Lake Erie. Keep in mind that Jesse Owens came out of an established and viable black community in Cleveland. There are other successes.

Cleveland is a manufacturing city. When those factories closed, generations of people couldn't find work. The downtown stopped being a viable center of anything and the population collapsed, as those that could headed to the suburbs.

Over eight years ago, when I moved to a near-suburb, people categorized Cleveland with Detroit and Newark. It hasn't had that fate. There has been construction and new businesses and the city can pay its bills. Losing that hub is huge, considering the initiatives to bring convention business and manufacturing back.

It's a shame that with all of the construction and attempts to upgrade Cleveland, more wasn't done to make sure the hub was going to stay put. Everthing is focused on the next project. Not enough is done to make sure the positives stay that way.

At Buffalo, that was not an issue.
The captain had 3,263 hrs, and the co-pilot had 2,200 hours, 772 of those in that same type of aircraft.

Over-dependence on the auto-pilot, leading to the crew not recognizing the probable icing until it was too late caused the crash.

That the Captain chose to sleep in the crew rest area, instead of a hotel, and pocketing the per diem money is something crews have done for 6+ decades. All-in-all, it was a series of poor choices by the captain.

At Lexington, it was inattention caused by yick-yacking in the cockpit, as well as an understaffed tower, with a controller too busy to note where the aircraft was going, and poor airport signage.

The New Duty rules were designed to boost Union membership, and harm independents (truckers most especially). For the flight crews, it has resulted in a cut in hours, and less pay. Hopey-Changey....

Puerto Ricans are illegals??? Get a grip...

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico

Spain ceded the archipelago, as well as the Philippines, to the United States as a result of its defeat in the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1917, the U.S. granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans; since 1948, they have elected their own governor. In 1952 the Constitution of Puerto Rico was adopted and ratified by the electorate.

Reminds me of the time while employed for a MAJOR airline manufacturer, located in the Seattle & Everett Washington State area(s) {just to name a few so other's can get the HINT!!!}

While filling out the job application they asked "FATHER'S PLACE OF BIRTH" I answered Vieques, (Pronounced "V"---"ache"---"as") Puerto Rico.

Approximately six months after getting hired, they sent some guy in a BROOK's Brother's Suit, (A Lot of money for that suit) to ask for my "PASSPORT," being the very, very sarcastic person that I am, I asked him "would that be the same PASSPORT, that one uses to go from say "New York" to "New Jersey?"

He got very visibly upset and started to lecture me that you don't need a PASSPORT to go from "New York" to "New Jersey," and then you could see the lights came on, he apologized and just left the table we were at.

RE :”I got re routed on United this fall coming back from England. I think they have the oldest stewardess working. It was like flying with a bunch of crabby old aunts.”

I went to Monterrey CA from here once and SW doesn't go there so I took United, it was one disaster after another, weather kept the plane from taking off for two hours, they dumped me at the Denver Airport with no carry-ons because the connecting flights where all gone, the next day they routed me to San Francisco instead of my destination. Eventually I got there at noon instead of the previous day.

The only good part was I got the business seat upgrade for FREE because he couldn't get his credit card machine working,

Granted jobs and manufacturing were lost, many moved to the suburbs.Any guess as to why?.
Even as a child of 8yrs I was reading the Cleveland Press and remembering reading stories of unmarried women with 8 children migrating from the south with no job prospects no money and begging for help. This was late 50’s before Johnson’s Great Society. The problem then exacerbated.
.The black population of Cleveland was concentrated in the Scovill area.
The ethnic neighborhoods of the Lithuanians,Poles,Hungarians,Czechs were decimated by the influx into these communities. The inner city rotted.
What were once vibrant areas, became crime ridden and the housing collapsed.
I watched my parents pay for a home only to have to give away.As a child ,I was spat on by grown men.The prospect of me staying and thriving in Cleveland dimmed. My parents and all my relatives left for the “burbs”,with that went jobs and a once thriving neighborhood that I can never go back to and say “that’s the house I used to live in”.
It’s gone, torn down because of the “wonderful diversity” that enveloped Cleveland.

Of possible interest to the freepers that have commented on United’s plans, I received the above updated email from United Airlines early this morning.

(Personal note to all: As some of you know, we vacation in Vegas. It is a great location to see the Western part of the US: Death Valley Nat. Park, Zion Nat. Park, Grand Canyon Nat. Park, Disneyland Calf., and of course Las Vegas and surrounding area.)
