What cracks me up are those who inevitably blame the trucks.

Word is that the speed & trailer restrictions were lifted on the recommendation of the Turnpike maintenance crews. Oooops! The eastbound lanes were slush covered but in spots there was glare ice underneath.

As ever, you are completely true to your moniker. Don’t really have anything more to say to you. It’s a waste of time, especially when I didn’t start out responding to something you scrawled.

I guess it’s a Southern thing: post a comment on a public forum and not expect a response. /s

"I heard it wasn’t really weather-related to the snow/ice."

Of course not! Yeah... musta been something else...

The only time I was ever in an accident in the NE was when I was rear ended by an 18 wheeler. It wasn’t either of our faults really. Someone cut off the car in front of me (as part of one of those calculated wrecks designed to get maximum insurance payout) who slammed on the brakes. I slammed on the brakes and stopped several ft from them. The 18wheeler behind me though misjudged his stopping distance by about 3”. Unfortunately it was the rear 3” of my car.

Fortunately for everyone, the whole thing was caught on video and the perps were eventually prosecuted. They were *drumroll*, illegals.

I wonder just how many wrecks involving snow and ice involve people who shouldn’t be driving at all. Or, have no cultural experience with ice or snow. Ever.

I thought we were supposed to blame un-manned SUVs for everything? ;)

I really feel for these people. What a major PITA this is for them!

Here in the north we deserve the derision for big crashes. We should know better.

There was a big crash on I-94 last week near Jackson MI in whiteout conditions. Everybody around here knows its a bad stretch in the best conditions but plenty of people still get out there and go as fast as they can in bumper to bumper traffic.

Myself, I would have simply avoided that stretch of road because I know its a disaster waiting to happen.

I was rear ended in ice a few years back.

The guy who slid into me apologized, gave me his insurance info, and went on his way.

The entire episode took 5 minutes.

There was open speculation on one of the weather boards I was on that in this economy people are afraid of losing what few hours they actually get to work by staying home. And others are afraid of just being canned. So people drive in conditions they really shouldn’t.

When I lived in the NE I was lucky and had a somewhat flexible schedule and built up vacation days. Ice is ice regardless of the latitude you’re driving. And physics is physics, ditto ditto.

I think a grade minimum of C in high school physics should be a prerequisite to driving in rain or snow. No one really wants to become a living demonstration of frictionless motion.

This particular incident included 3 whole lanes of the NJ Turnpike at rush hour and included 2 18 wheelers. It took a bit more than 5m unfortunately.

What made me angry was the whole unnecessary thing. There are already enough wrecks on the Turnpike, we don’t really need more.

From the article.

One driver said that road spray on windshields plus the sun low in the sky may have hindered visibility as drivers found themselves suddenly upon a stopped vehicle ahead with insufficient room to stop on the slick pavement.

I know a driving instructor who says that they just don’t teach a lot of the things we old farts learned about driving. He says they don’t even teach how to drive out of a slide anymore because almost all cars have traction control.

Where I grew up, most of us had fairly extensive experience driving by the time we were 15 or 16 years old.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to 'work from home', which I did so today following yesterday's snow ... if I had to go into the office, I would have gotten caught in this: I normally get on the PA Turnpike at Willow Grove EB and get off at Bensalem.

(... whew ...)
