Ukrainian troops dispatched in Crimea switch to region’s side – sources (Defects to pro-Russians)

Ukrainian armed forces dispatched to Crimea have switched to the side of local authorities and are expected to take military oath soon, Russian news agencies report.

Facts you need to know about Crimea and why it is in turmoil

“Today the majority of the Ukrainian armed forces deployed in Crimea passed to the side of the authorities of the Crimean autonomous region. The transition was absolutely peaceful, without a single shot fired either by the military or by the forces of self-defense,” an unnamed source told RIA Novosti news agency.

The source added that some of the servicemen also ran away, while some submitted letters of resignation.

The local military have not been paid for many months, the source also told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Ukrainian troops in Crimea were said to be resigning on a massive scale. Living quarters, weapons and ammunition have all been left under the protection of the so-called ‘self-defense forces.’

Letters of resignation have been coming in since early morning, as the self-defense forces continue to preserve order on the streets of Simferopol, RIA Novosti said citing own reporters on the ground.

Since Thursday, the city’s Supreme Council and a number of other buildings have been occupied and guarded by the self-defense forces run by the local population.

Crimea’s deputy prime minister, Rustam Temirgaliev, announced that the Ukrainian armed forces have all but surrendered their military capabilities and that no active units remain in the Crimea.

"The entire Ukrainian armed forces stationed on the Crimean territory have been blocked," Interfax reported him as saying. "The self-defense forces have taken control of the landing strips of all the Crimean airports and airfields."

The deputy PM said that that the region’s security services and emergency services now report to the local government.

Crimeans began protesting after the new self-imposed government in Kiev introduced a law abolishing the use of other languages for official documents in Ukraine. More than half the Crimean population are Russian and use only this language for their communication. The residents have announced they are going to hold a referendum on March 30 to determine the fate of the Ukrainian autonomous region.

Russia Today is a source of information more trustworthy than CNN and NBC. I often counter-checked their news and RT won always, hands down. Get over it. The Soviet Union ceased to exist 23 years ago, one whole generation.

Someone should tell Putin that. As to RT: It's bad. Not as bad as Voice of Russia, but nonetheless it's just an outlet for the Kremlin.

They are a state run propaganda agency that is totally funded and staffed by Russian sycophants. I don’t know how they stack up to MSM propaganda, but in my view they are both equally dishonest and untrustworthy.

If you think that Russia would spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a news agency that is fair and balanced, and is honest on reporting even on Russia, then you really need to open your eyes.

Several of the Russian government sites are accurate and objective to that degree, and have the additional advantage that they are adware, spyware, and controlware free.

I guess we should stop posting any news from any source. It’s all propaganda.

I think most of us are smart enough to be able to read something and decide for ourselves what to believe and what not to believe.

In the end we’ll find out the truth.

Not a shot fired in Crimea and no “enemy” left. Cool.

It will be downright cold in Crimea if the tensions escalate. Their gas for heat and cooking comes from a pipeline that crosses Ukraine.

Putin's adventure may turn into a real mess if you look at the history of past Russian and Polish attempts to rule Ukraine.

Imperial Russia ruled Ukraine for 350 years, and after that the Soviet Union ruled it for another 72 years. No big deal.

Just follow the money.

1) Who founded RT?
2) Who funds RT?

Once you figure that out, ask yourself how spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a news agency could possibly serve in their national interest.

PS: If you can find ANYTHING reported by Russia Today that is critical of Putin, reveals any type of activity in Russia that puts Putin in a bad light, reports on anything that puts Sochi in a bad light, or in any way criticizes the current regime in Russia, I will reconsider.

Thanks for clarifying that, LOL

According to you, squatters have more rights than land owners.

Yes, the russians are squatters in Ukraine. Apparently the russians are too stupid to learn the Ukrainian language while squatting in Ukraine. Somehow this gives them the right to land ownership in Ukraine.

Coming soon: All Americans MUST learn Spanish and abide by spanish laws if they want to hold on to their land or homes in USA.

Well, to be fair, you did write the word, "most." I'd still be leery of FReepers who post Russian propaganda in broken English, though. (Not stating it happened here, but I've seen it).

The "side" of SELF DETERMINATION!IF the Western revolutionaries had the right to overthrow an elected government in the name of self determination, then why not an unelected one by the Eastern?

The EU is just as corrupt a bunch of oligarchs as the Russians. Or is it because you simply hate those "damn commie Rooskies"?

That was a bone headed move. Ukrainian has been the official language for government use for some time. There was no reason to poke native Russian speakers in the eye.
