Exclusive: Radar data suggests missing Malaysia plane deliberately flown way off course - sources

Military radar data suggests a Malaysia Airlines jetliner missing for nearly a week was deliberately flown hundreds of miles off course, heightening suspicions of foul play among investigators, sources told Reuters on Friday.

Analysis of the Malaysia data suggests the plane, with 239 people on board, diverted from its intended northeast route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and flew west instead, using airline flight corridors normally employed for routes to the Middle East and Europe, said sources familiar with investigations into the Boeing 777's disappearance.

Two sources said an unidentified aircraft that investigators believe was Flight MH370 was following a route between navigational waypoints when it was last plotted on military radar off the country's northwest coast.

This indicates that it was either being flown by the pilots or someone with knowledge of those waypoints, the sources said.

The last plot on the military radar's tracking suggested the plane was flying toward India's Andaman Islands, a chain of isles between the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, they said.

Waypoints are geographic locations, worked out by calculating longitude and latitude, that help pilots navigate along established air corridors.

A third source familiar with the investigation said inquiries were focusing increasingly on the theory that someone who knew how to fly a plane deliberately diverted the flight.

Modern twin engine airliners, are complied to turn and head for an alternate airport, at the first indication of trouble....I believe the flight computer is programmed to fly directly to the nearest airport, with the selection of a control.....given that the aircraft flew on for a time, would suggest that the pilots were incapacitated, possibly from a decompression of the aircraft....

What about the timing differences in the shutdown of the communications. What was it 14-17 minute difference? What would explain that?

At first, I thought they might have had a catastrophic electrical failure and lost their panel other than their steam gauges or had to shut things down for similar reasons, but the engine data reports refutes that idea a bit.

Now, it seems more likely to be a well thought out hijacking, much more impressive than the more common Somali ship hijackings or the airliner hijackings of old.

It would be interesting to see a log of the flights the captain flew on his home simulator, but any number of passengers could have simulator time/experience, if not actual flight time.

Someone or something on that plane is very valuable.

I see on Google Earth a large airstrip on one of the Adaaman Islands at: 11-38 and 92-43.
I am not suggesting the plane landed there, but that the airport must have radar for airtraffic, and I bet they will be checked out for possible info on the missing flight. - Tom

Veer Savarkar Airport, commonly known as Port Blair Airport has one runway, 10794 ft. in length.

I would think the 777 200-ER could be landed, fueled, and take off from there, so long as it wasn't at maximum take-off weight (requires 11,100 ft. of runway). 777 link

I agree...I think that is the evidence that points this to more of a deliberate act vs malfunction. It seems that if the plane crashed/exploded that the communications would have stopped at the same time. Then again, I am not too familiar with aircraft communications.

LATE BREAKING NEWS: Flight MH370 deliberately flown hundreds of miles off course.

Didn’t this same news come out 5 days ago ???

At that time, the evidence was not as clear as it is now...

Veer Savarkar Airport and other airports in Andaman and Nicobars Islands are managed and controlled by Indian Air force/Indian Navy.
Getting fuel is impossible .

I read a post from someone claiming to be a pilot on another blog who stated the scenario you just did was possible and knows an instance or two where it is known to have happened before.

Another interesting post on the same blog asked if there had been any minor earthquake noted on land Saturday or early Sunday because a plane (if it crashed on land) would make it appear a very, small earthquake had occurred.

This is quite a mystery in this day and age when a satellite can see our car tag numbers from space and cannot seem to see a plane weighing hundreds of tons!

CNN was just in a 777 sim. There are eight separate power systems and it takes several steps to shut down the ACAREs and the vhf and hf radios. Apparently no one breaker can drop everything. It was done deliberately by someone with knowledge and training.

I wonder if NSA is keeping mum, in case they are not ready to admit that they keep every square meter of the planet under constant surveillance. Or maybe they are hoping that this plane will cause enough of a fuss that they are asked to start doing so. Bad timing for them with the Snowden stuff, they could have really expanded the empire.
