Briefly, here's the story from the owner's neighbor.
A Walton County Sheriff's deputy shot my friends dog last night while the dog was in his own yard. The officer said he shot him because "he had that look". This was one of the sweetest dogs ever...a big clumsy pup that would lick your face off. Yes he was a blue nose pit bull but he was a PUPPY who loves to play and chew stuff up! The dog actually belonged to Taylor, a 5 year old little girl...now COMPLETELY broken hearted, not to mention confused because a policeman, someone she should see as a protector, just shot her dog. My heart hurts for her. She actually cried herself to sleep on the dogs bed last night.
Something needs to happen because that cop was 100% WRONG for shooting this sweet dog! Will you please share my photo because something needs to be done! That poor dog should NEVER have been shot!
My response is this email to the cop's boss:
If your deputy did act as it has been reported in social media, he needs to find employment elsewhere. He should begin practicing the phrase "Want fries with that" as that's probably the only job for which he MIGHT be suited!
If Schopenhauer has it right, and my experience in my 74 years indicates he is, this "deputy" is NOT "...a good man" and will probably murder a human citizen of Walton County at some point: Compassion for animals is intimately associated with goodness of character, and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man. Arthur Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality
But, of course, given how today's much thicker "thin blue line" closes ranks around even the worst of their ranks, even THAT sort of behavior will quickly find its way into the ever deepening "law enforcement" memory hole.
Here's a suggestion as to how to eliminate these senseless murders of peoples' pets: NEVER HIRE A COP WHO HASN'T OWNED, LOVED AND CARED FOR A LARGE DOG!
I won't even get into how the "militarization" of the police plays into these sorts of tragedies. That's a topic unto itself.
My granddaughter has 2 full grown Pits and you will never know sweeter animals. I have cautioned her to NEVER CALL THE POLICE TO HER HOME for reasons being made clear with the almost daily killing of these animals by so-called LEOs, many of whom probably these situations as opportunities to shoot at something besides those boring paper targets at the range!
Might want to step away from your monitor now as here's a photo of one of these crazed beasts:
World's Safest Baby!
PS: I'll do my best to stay out of or bypass Walton County even though my son married into one of the original settler families out there. Fortunately, he and his family -- and their 5 dogs -- now live elsewhere. PPS: No reply desired nor expected. Have a GREAT DAY. I'm sure it will be better than that of the 5 year old who loved that dog.

I’ll do it. And as I suspected - there is another side to the story.
Man says dog was ‘sweet, loving’; deputy says it charged him, so he shot it (PHOTOS)
Although that dog may be the sweetest ever, it comes in a package that has a reputation for violence. There is no way to tell a good one from a bad one and it only takes one incident to scar someone for life. This in no way justifies the cop shooting this or any other dog without VERY good cause. My vet tried to get me to adopt an abandoned pit bull pup that she assured me was a great dog. I thought about it but with 2 young grandkids I could never take the chance.
Walton County Sheriff, Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. - DeFuniak Springs ...
I doubt anything will happen to the deputy. This will probably be one of those occasion where, if you want justice, you have to take it.
That’s what I was thinking. I love my dog, but it’s still a somewhat unpredictable animal and is treated as such. Letting it get that close to an infant is almost criminal in itself.
well which Walton County is it? The article lists the sheriff of Walton County, GA but all the stories seem to be about the one in Florida.
Jack-booted thugs do no one a favor and it has been a damn long time since any cop did anyone a favor.
It was just a matter of time before the pit bull ATE the little girl.
Hyperbolic bullshit much?
Flame away.
Gladly.
It’s pretty clear from the article that the dumbass owner let the dog run loose and it then harassed neighbors who called the cops.
Outcome is predictable.
Feel better? Knee-jerking all done?
Good. Then read the article. Read the comments. Then come back and apologize for stinking up this thread.
I’m sure the little girl is heartbroken. It sucks losing a pet, even moreso the way she lost hers.
Unfortunately, through no fault of its own, the dog really didn’t stand a chance IF the article is correct. An adolescent, intact (he doesn’t look neutered in the last pic in the album) pit bull running loose is a recipe for disaster. Your friend should have been a more responsible dog owner—doubly so because of the breed and its reputation.
Nope.
I apologize to no one.
We had 2 cases (where I live) within two weeks of a pit bull killing a two year old and then another case where a six year old was mauled. Your right, just a matter of time.
some will say it goes back to the owner, but the breeds history tells otherwise. Not worth the risk or the liability, IMHO.
This would never have happened if Ep Bridges was still the sheriff.
"The report from the Sheriffs Office cites an August 2013 incident in which a child was taken to the hospital after suffering an injury from the dog."
The dog's owner (...er...former owner) lied about dog's history of violence.
Our neighbor has a pair of pit bulls that they raised from puppies as family pets. They were kind and gentle until the day when, working together, they suddenly charged into our yard and mauled out elderly black lab.
Well then we can discount a fool.
It was bred for a certain thing.
See my tag-line.
yep
