before or after ditching? If it is in the water it is no longer air tight.

If Impacted it won’t be.

Think US Air 1549 in the Hudson.

Capt. Sully made a “soft landing” and still had H2O in the tail section while He was clearing/searching for Pax.

I understand the pilots are trained to ditch a plane in that area and if there was a fire or the pilot could not control whatever happenig to the plane.... he would set it that way.

There was two piolets talking about this and both confirmed if they had to ditch a plane in an emergency situation it would be the area they’re searching now....with the understanding the plane could have been on auto-piolet for some time....until either it ran out of gas or fire melted the controls.

My guess would be he’s pretty sure but doesn’t want to say so until they are on location and know without a doubt. I would guess their satellite imagery is pretty darn good.

I don’t know about that.

I know that AF447’s composite vstab floated because of trapped air.

When it was flying over the Maldives the engines were loud. Partly because it was so low. How far are those islands from the search area?

Maldives is south West of India. Location of debris is South of India near Perth, Australia

I just remembered that CFRP is much denser than water.

There’s virtually no chance that such a fire would leave the auto pilot in working order.

The auto pilot and auto throttles will shut off if anything goes wrong and they lose any of the data and sensors they need to operate.

rudder of a330 tail is constructed of composite honeycomb panels... the pics of the tail that I remember seeing had the rudder intact.... what is sealed honeycomb if not ‘trapped air’ ?

I am unable to give sources or any other information, however I am looking at a hard copy of the satellite imagery which clearly shows the two pieces of debris.
The larger one at 24 metres is definitely a part of an aircraft wing, if it is the 777 we are looking for it would be from the engine pylon to the tip. The other part is harder to tell what it is.
The credible information is that it was found at the extreme fuel range of the aircraft off the West coast of Australia near Perth. The theory of a Helios type tragedy is now most likely but is still speculation.

http://www.corecomposites.com/composites/reinforcements/

Data on CFHC

SG is 1.8 so just under 2x H2O SG

So it would require additional trapped air to float.
