ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 22, 1968

Where were you? I was a sophomore at a little engineering college in Philadelphia where I supposedly majored in chemistry but actually majored in college radio. As music director, I managed to hear everything that was released, both good and bad. I was in ROTC, which put me outside the college social scene. The hippies, whom I ordinarily admired, were hogging all the sex, something for which I’ve never forgiven them.

So what were you up to?

Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

This band was Motown’s Funk Brothers backed with pickup musicians from the Detroit Symphony.

#10 – Georgie Fame: “The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde”

Arthur Penn’s film ”Bonnie and Clyde” had been one of the first films to graphically depict violence, and it made Warren Beatty a star. This song did not come from the film but was an attempt by a British artist to capitalize on the film’s success.

I guess it is an old idea. I know Xerxes bridged the Hellespont with a bridge of boats around 500 BC. He moved several hundred thousand troops over it according to Herodotus.

My slogan was, "Make love and war," which didn't go over very well with the hippie women.

ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 22, 1968

A CURIOSITY – Larry Marks: “L.A. Break Down”

Last week, I introduced you to the work of producer Larry Marks at A&M Records with Tandyn Almer’s “Little Girl Lost and Found”, recorded by the Garden Club. Marks was to become a success later with the Flying Burrito Brothers, Phil Ochs and others, but here he records and produces his own song. It was Judy Collins and Helen Reddy who brought it to the public, but Marks’ version is well produced even if he doesn’t quite have the voice to carry it. It got some air play, but didn’t score, which is a shame.

I fear we're in for another drought this year.
